I'm thinking about switching to the 3.09s in my HCWB Challenger. Should I do just the gears and have the shop I trust install them, or just order a full diff and put my stock diff in storage for somewhere down the line when someone might want to switch it back to factory stock?

FWIW I don't have any big HP mods planned right now, and if I did I'd have to go through the whole driveline beefing things up (driveshaft, axle shafts, CVs, etc.) to be thorough.

Anyone worth their salt You’ll pay as much for install and proper set up as a new diff will cost you, last I looked the auto diffs where only around 750, manual 3.73 is twice that a 1350, dont know why?? Supply and demand ???
Get a complete unit, It’s nice having a spare plus you could sell it and get half your money back at the very least for the other one you want

I agree with 16GoManGoHC.
It will be cheaper to just replace the entire diff.

Early on the parts for them were impossible to find. Not sure how much of that has changed with time.

I guess the real question is what are you looking to get out of the 3.09's? That being said, the full diff is the better option as already suggested....
Since I don't visualize myself ever running 200MPH, I was thinking about getting some more punch off the line and midrange.

Can I ask why? Biggest difference between the 2 Gears in my car I have seen is gas mileage? below an 1/8 some difference but after that.... not much.
So far I'm just kicking around some ideas. Like I said I'm thinking about a little more punch around town and I'm not planning to run 200 MPH any time soon. I could add power, but honestly changing the gears is much simpler.

Step one is actually finding more traction!

$4K for a diff swap... Yikes! o_O... It's not that big a job!
That's kinda what I was thinking. Their price did replace all the CVs, shafts, the entire case, etc. which I really don't think is necessary. I gotta believe I could swap it for less, or buy the gears and set them. Fortunately I did gear design and manufacturing for years so it's not our of my comfort zone.

That's nuts. The Scat Pack diff is less than $1k down there. The Demon/RE diff is less than $2k. CV's don't need to necessarily be changed.

If you're gonna do that much, upgrade to Redeye specs if you have not already.
