Hey guys I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has switched to a Gen 5 Whipple 3.0 on their hellcats or Gen 3 hemi and have had any issues? I have seen more than one failure from friends and acquaintances recently and when they talked to Whipple apparently they will not warranty a GEN 5 Unit that has signs of "over spinning" and that over spinning is 18,000 RPM or more. They said if I plan on running more than 18,000 rpm I should buy spare whipple superchargers and switch them out to be rebuilt periodically.

This unit was touted as being able to spin faster and longer then previous units and could be run 22,000-24,000 rpm plus with no issues. I am currently running around 18,200 with my setup and making the same boost as my stock un ported hellcat blower did at 21,462 RPM redline. I didn't want to push the stocker any further so I upgraded. I have built motor all supporting mods to support some serious boost and now I'm thinking I should have went another route.

Is anyone else running a Gen 5 and if so what's your pulley combo/rpm you are running? How many passes/miles do you have on your setup?

I’m running a 9% overdrive lower and a 3” upper pulley. Not many miles, but was never told to stay below 18,000 rpm blower speed.
I have the 9% IW lower and 3.125 was planning on a 2.75. Your only running 18,958 RPM at 6,500 engine RPM with that set up so not much over 18,000. Its crazy to me that I can beat on my car for 15000 miles with a 2.65 and 9% lower on stock blower and no failures yet this high dollar precision blower apparently can not.

Just pulled my 3.0 over the weekend and it left yesterday to go back to Whipple finally. Had no time to get to it.

Here are 2 videos of what it looked and sounded like. Less then 400 miles on it.

In talking with Jeremy Satera yesterday he told me the failure rate of 3.0 Whipples he has installed is 75% :(
He said for longevity he prefers a worked over 2.4 the best with one of his Rings of Hell quick change pulley systems on it for quick changes, I ordered one yesterday in a 2.74 size. Cheaper than a new Litens and supposed to be 4 times stronger and carry’s a 5 year no questions asked warranty, how could one say no to that? Cyber Monday deal made the quick change Rings of Hell pulley system with a 2.74 ring $730 with shipping.

I had a failure with my gen 5 drag pak unit. I had maybe 1 mile on it. Was on the dyno, 3.75" pulley, factory lower. The very first pull and at about 5krpm the blower driveshaft snapped at the pulley flange. I was in a pinch to get the car finished before drag week and josh at hhp save the day. Sent me over a new snout. Pretty sure it was just a material defect

It’s about the same ratio for me. I’m 3 good ones of 7 overall. But I will say if it wasn’t for the failures the whipple is an amazing blower. It also seems whipple is covering them all no questions asked. Hopefully the issue is resolved in future blowers. The last whipple I did was fine.

Do you know if anyone has destroyed an engine with a Whipple issue, and would Whipple cover that?

following for information.
I'll be curious how that works out Mike. Decoupler with pulley ring swap capability sounds like the best of both worlds.
And in conversation with Satera yesterday he said he’ll have one of these clutched quick change pulley systems out for the Whipple 3.0 by spring. He said he has a prototype in testing already for the 4.5 Whipple. I told him that’s a game changer for me with keeping my Whipple as what I’m seeing with my M6 is over reving between gears which is looking like it’s happening because of running a blower without a decoupling pulley, the blower inertia is spinning my engine rpm’s up even with the throttle closing while clutching between gears. I’m shifting at 6600 and motor rpm continues to climb to 71-7200 rpm.
