Imagine the fun of having a speedy airplane-style drone with a camera, and driving along with your drone-flying friend beside you, scoping things out ahead of you, so you know where the highway is deserted and you can really open'er up!

Technology FTW!

Hi,

Sounds like a movie plot gimic, sure there's something on the books by the FAA and other legal authorities that would get you a big fine, not to mention if it caused a accident or if your or someone else's drone crashed into a car or truck.

Regards,
Jim

Is a drone fast enough to be useful...even if it could be operated in terrain, a mile or two ahead?

Decades ago C&D had an article on home built radar jammers, the kit allowed you to dial in the speed you wanted, 35, 45, 55 and 100. Some kids set up in hiding near a radar trap, waited for some old lady to drive by in a rusted out Duster and zapped it with 100, she was obviously doing maybe 50. The kids were highly entertained at the resulting PD interaction, as were the C&D readers with the story. It was a great magazine back in the day.

Most higher end drones can easily follow an object autonomously. The problem is most of them cannot go the speed of a car and spend more than 30 minutes or so in the air.
Oh, there are some REALLY high-end drones out there that can go on tens of miles, possibly hundreds of flying, following a GPS-set route.
Of course, if you want endurance, it is going to look and act more like a sailplane. If you want speed, then you have to sacrifice either small size or endurance.

This baby comes in at 900 shaft hp, 300mph top end so Hellephant worthy. Downside, the cost and it requires a 2 operator crew. However call up the ops center tell them you are headed to the grocery store and they can fly over watch. No more pesky speeding tickets.

How good are drones (or more correctly, their operators) at detecting unmarked units?
My Valentine One thankfully doesn't care what color the vehicles are.

That Airdog goes 30-40 mph. Hardly enough to keep the lookout ahead. Two or three things may be problematic here.

Pilots using a moving vehicle have to verify they are never flying over people, it is a sparse area, not restricted air space and must keep it in sight. Oh, unless your a registered Drone Pilot and get a temp exemption for your flight.

Your Pilot has to have a fairly robust camera screen, because they will need to identify all cars ahead, or coming at you with moving radar, right?

The MQ-9 is best :D it probably has a nice radar detection system built in!

I was thinking more along the lines of "just use the drone to make sure there are no cars of ANY sort on the upcoming highway, or worse, beside it."

I have often thought about that. I have a UAS License. We fly a few around construction sites. Most are good for 45 mph in the “sport” modes. Even if a guy could say it was clear, and then think if a guy proceeds along the highway at some speed. Then a car can approach from the on coming direction with radar and its’ closing speed on us coming at them with some speed could be quite fast, darn it!

That is why I really get into closed course driving. These longer tracks are a blast with our cars. That is why I bought a car with 800 hp. We certainly don’t need that power or anywhere near our 205 mph top speed on any highway I know of.
