When buying my Hellcat on Friday night, I got caught up with the dealer offered protection packs. I'm a veteran car buyer and usually just "nope" my way out of the finance office. But with the Hellcat, it seemed a little different. Never owned a supercharged car before and the HC is literally double the price I've paid for any other car.
I did ask questions about the service contract portion, the glass/wheel/fob coverage and then the paint coating package. These are actually 3 separate line items: service contract (Comprehensive to 8 yr/84k miles); glass/wheel/fob (5 years); paint protective coating with warranty (7 years). I did Google it a little before deciding and didn't quickly find a lot of negatives, so I went for it. I was assured that the service contract and glass/wheel/fob coverage can be canceled any time before it is used, but the paint protection was non-refundable.
Since this is the detailing forum, I mainly will ask about the Zurich Paint Protection system. The price for this item was around $1200. In my mind, I was thinking this was comparable to real ceramic coating (though the finance guy did say it was not a full ceramic but a hybrid or something like that) and that the cost was in line with a full service ceramic coat job. I also asked to be sure they did a full prep first and was assured they did. I also mentioned that I did want to get PPF installed and confirmed that I should have that done before the paint protection is done (as I will have to make an appointment to come back for it to be "installed").
With the leisure to research it, I guess the Zurich "paint protection" really is not a true ceramic and is likely not very long lasting (not to mention not nearly as protective as a well-applied ceramic). Maybe even requiring reapplication twice a year. Who knows about the 7 year paint warranty, but Zurich does seem to have a pretty good reputation regarding claims.
So...since the paint protection has not yet been applied, I'm wondering if I can still get it canceled. Maybe even using pulling the other coverage as leverage. If not, should I go ahead with having it installed (after I get PPF) and then plan for a true ceramic coating in a year or two? Or should I walk away from it and just eat it? My biggest concern is that the "installers" likely don't know what they are doing and may cause damage with their prep, or "seal" in any existing imperfections.
Obviously questions about this should have happened BEFORE I said yes. But that's in the past and I'd just like thoughts on what to do now. Thanks!
