When buying my Hellcat on Friday night, I got caught up with the dealer offered protection packs. I'm a veteran car buyer and usually just "nope" my way out of the finance office. But with the Hellcat, it seemed a little different. Never owned a supercharged car before and the HC is literally double the price I've paid for any other car.

I did ask questions about the service contract portion, the glass/wheel/fob coverage and then the paint coating package. These are actually 3 separate line items: service contract (Comprehensive to 8 yr/84k miles); glass/wheel/fob (5 years); paint protective coating with warranty (7 years). I did Google it a little before deciding and didn't quickly find a lot of negatives, so I went for it. I was assured that the service contract and glass/wheel/fob coverage can be canceled any time before it is used, but the paint protection was non-refundable.

Since this is the detailing forum, I mainly will ask about the Zurich Paint Protection system. The price for this item was around $1200. In my mind, I was thinking this was comparable to real ceramic coating (though the finance guy did say it was not a full ceramic but a hybrid or something like that) and that the cost was in line with a full service ceramic coat job. I also asked to be sure they did a full prep first and was assured they did. I also mentioned that I did want to get PPF installed and confirmed that I should have that done before the paint protection is done (as I will have to make an appointment to come back for it to be "installed").

With the leisure to research it, I guess the Zurich "paint protection" really is not a true ceramic and is likely not very long lasting (not to mention not nearly as protective as a well-applied ceramic). Maybe even requiring reapplication twice a year. Who knows about the 7 year paint warranty, but Zurich does seem to have a pretty good reputation regarding claims.

So...since the paint protection has not yet been applied, I'm wondering if I can still get it canceled. Maybe even using pulling the other coverage as leverage. If not, should I go ahead with having it installed (after I get PPF) and then plan for a true ceramic coating in a year or two? Or should I walk away from it and just eat it? My biggest concern is that the "installers" likely don't know what they are doing and may cause damage with their prep, or "seal" in any existing imperfections.

Obviously questions about this should have happened BEFORE I said yes. But that's in the past and I'd just like thoughts on what to do now. Thanks!

As a former F&I guy, I appreciate a fat deal at the end of the month.

And as usual you also have zero good info for the OP. Well done cluttering the forum for your own amusement.

OP, I would see what your options are of getting out of it. If you’re doing PPF you don’t need anything else. Get a good PPF done with some infused ceramic and forget about it if you can

If you can’t get out of it even though they haven’t applied anything yet, if it were me I would skip the PPF and hope these guys stand behind their product. I can’t see myself paying for PPF to seal my paint from the elements and still paying more on top of that for any sort of warranty along with a subpar product.

Thanks for a more helpful, thoughtful reply @saagz87. I definitely will be exploring canceling the paint service on Monday. No idea where it will go.

I checked someones previous posts and saw no notable contributions. Fortunately the forum ignore feature works.

My dealer offered a me a graphene coating which is supposed to be better than a ceramic coating. Plus the Zurich extended warranty aanndd… a coating for the interior of the car. I refused all as I don’t trust the dealer for anything but to line their pockets and no benefit for us, the consumer. Just more ADM to add on the already high price of any new vehicle. In my personal experience, the salesman are NOT car guys. 99.9 % of the time we have way more knowledge about what we’re buying than they can provide.
For instance: when they offered me the graphene package and the “interior protection” package (I know there is product out there to do this, but I would not trust that the dealer really applies it) they also said that i Get a voucher for 10 free car washes at the local car wash down the street. So naturally I was like “lol, are you serious?!? Anyone knows you don’t bring a car through a touch less wash if you care about it” he said “but it has the graphene coating” plus I’ve had bad experiences at the dealer getting my Ram 3500 serviced from their so called diesel mechanics and they never changed the oil so who knows what else they didn’t do.
My apologies for the long winded response but please, please don’t get hosed for that garbage from the dealer. I hate seeing people get ripped off. Especially when these dealers are already making a shit ton of money from these ADM’s

So, does the coating have a "warranty" is the big thing. Many pro coatings have a warranty that isn't worth crap. HOWEVER, dealer installed coatings are usually backed by an insurance company, read the fine print. If so, usually they have you come back every 6 months or something to redo it, if you don't the warranty is dead. NOW, if you do go back every 6 months and you end up with bird poop etching, water spots or whatever else is covered, they will fix it it or paint it, or whatever. You won't find a detailer that offers that. Detailer applied coatings are pretty good, I apply Pearl Nano and IGL, graphene or not, they all do the job. Graphene is supposed to resist water spots better than normal ceramic. I moved to SC in July, the only car that has water spots of mine, the graphene one, never had water spot issues in Ohio, so water does make a difference.

Just watch the movie "Fargo" during the car sale part.............
Lol. My thoughts exactly, usually and for most things. I did NOT get the undercoating!

The service contract and the tire/wheel/windshield/fob contract are both cancelable. It is only the paint package that isn't, but since it hasn't been installed yet, I hope I can get out.

And as others have said, I'm more concerned about the quality of the work that will be done with the paint protection than with the protection itself. My sale guy IS a car guy...president of the local Mopar club. But it was the Finance guy who pushes this stuff, of course.

When I purchased my HC, the F&I guy tried this same approach. He even complimented me on the watch I was wearing that day lol. When he could see that it wasn't going to fly, he said he would cut the cost in half and basically give it to me at dealer cost. No, No and hell no.

Nancy Reagan told me to "Just Say No", what part don't you understand the n or the o. Seriously just call them back and have the work cancelled before it starts.

Finally was able to speak to the business office today and they indicated it was not going to be a problem to refund since it has not yet been installed. Just need to determine how to do it. Dunno if that means that they never have before or what. But as soon as it is confirmed refunded, I will get some PPF on the front area and then ceramic.

The main problem I have with these dealer coatings is not mainly the product but who installs it. There going to have little Johnny in the back take care of it.
I’m sure most of You guys read my posts about my dealership applied the paint protection coating without asking me first. I raised hell about it and the a$$holes still wouldn’t give me a refund.
And I had a lot of issues with my black paint but a couple other members had the same cloudy marks from an idiot using an orbital on it. Probably from the factory. They have guys use orbitals to buff imperfections in the paint.
Anyways I had a professional detailer paint correction with polish, ceramic coating,PPF and window tints. My ‘22 Black HCWB looks so awesome now I’m confident I can win trophies at car shows.

They have agreed to refund my "Zurich Shield" since it was not applied. They are sending the refund to the loan holder though rather than me. Annoying but not really a big deal. I have 60 days to get the other parts of the Zurich warranty refunded without cost, so I'm just waiting for this one to post to my loan before requesting the others be refunded, then will get a real Mopar Service Contract for less money.

My car is at the detailer right now getting front PPF, ceramic window tint and then ceramic coating on the car. Should be ready for pickup today.

Good luck with all that man. Keep an eye out for that refund. Make sure your loan is credited. That sounds a little shady. And it will take a lot longer than just writing you a check. I assume you made a down payment? Why can’t they just write you a check because of the down payment
