Hellcat Durango randomly won’t start…

605 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  frictioncircle
My 21’ hellcat Durango just turned 29k (daily driver) Did a quick wash in my driveway, drove up the street to blow the water off, came back and ran inside to grab a drink and my lunch 5 mins later tried to leave and nothing happens when you press the start button. I have full electrical power, headlights, stereo, everything works as it should. No rat feet prints under the hood (chewed wires) Absolutely nothing when you press the red button. No crank, no noise other than the fuel pump making it’s normal sound.

I have a revelco, but that’s never given me issues ever as I haven’t even unplugged it in a few days. Called a friend at dodge and he said sounds like exactly what happens when the AUX battery under the seat goes bad. Went and got a new OEM battery, tossed in a new key fob battery, and still exact same. Fuses all seem ok as well.

kinda stumped. Not sure what check for befor I end up at the stealership.

must be something with the revelco..I have a kill switch and If I forget I set it the push start is dead. maybe try the revelco forum if there is such a thing

Ya not sure. I called them, explained everything and they seemed pretty confident it wasn’t the revelco. I grabbed my other revelco plug and swapped it out. Same. Fuel pump runs tho which these things disable the fuel pump.
Is this a thing that occasionally happens but then seems okay later? I noticed that hitting the switch before brake was fully depressed it wouldn’t turn over, then would have one or two other no starts before it would engage. Wasn’t clear if it just wouldn’t turn over or it was doing it randomly.
Did you try putting in Neutral? Could be starter relay (simplest fix), starter itself (suspect at that mileage), brake pedal switch (Check tail light operation), neutral safety switch (try starting in Neutral?) OR... Wiring. Yes, Ravelco install could be the culprit, but not likely.

Could be a bad transmission position switch that doesn't recognize the transmission is in P (or N). Before trying to start the engine move the lever up and back then shift to P or N.

Or the brake pedal switch is bad. Pump the brake pedal -- to work the switch.

Last but not least word is the keyfob batteries don't last long. Bought my 2020 Scat Pack in Nov. 2020. Had the car in for service not quite a year later in Oct. 2021. Service took the key and somehow tested it and reported the battery was low and replaced it right then and there (and at no charge). On the way home I stopped and bought a replacement battery for the 2nd key.

I pretty much tried to check everything that was already mentioned right off the bat as I got a ride to my shop and grabbed some tools.

But to answer some of the comments. No the vehicle has never given me any issues in the past, been flawless as I take really good care of it. Revelco was installed the very first week of ownership over a year ago so it shouldn’t be a “bad install”

I always change my keyfob batteries every couple months due to how notorious they are of not lasting. I changed all the batteries including the vehicle battery anyways just to be safe.

Checked every fuse with my tester, A ok.

I didn’t go in too much depth with the Brake light switch (checking the ohms) because the brake lights work as they should upon depressing the brake pedal.

Tried doing the neutral trick and cycling the shifter into gear as I thought it might of glitched but that didn’t help. Even tho the starter didn’t give any symptoms either, I still smacked it and kept attempting to start it which didn’t help.

it’s under warranty, so im just gunna have it towed to my dodge up the street and see what they can find. It’s a bit hard tinkering in the driveway with limited tools. Especially if it’s something electrical.

I’ll report back when I find out what’s going on.

There could be two switches at the brake pedal. One to work the lights the other a starter safety interlock.

That the no start occurred after a wash suggests that no start condition might be water related.

(Years ago testing some automotive test software I worked on I had field trips to visit vehicles for which the owner claimed the test software/the test equipment caused a problem. More than once at the car I'd go to remove the device from the OBD2 connector and encounter wetness.)

You might try aiming a leaf blower (I have a battery powered one) at the underside of the dash and along the back of the engine compartment and firewall area to see if this helps.

But that's all I have and it ain't much.
Update. The starter relay keeps blowing. They put a new one in, it starts and they drive it and it blows. Hopefully they can trace it easier with that info.

Called revelco as well to ask since it was a starting issue if anything can cause that and they said they’ve installed over 10,000 units in California alone with zero issues and said they pretty much guarantee it isn’t the killswitch. But if somehow it is, they will pay my entire bill and they will send someone to the dealership and will sit with the tech and walk them thru it all.

Hopefully it gets resolved soon.
I'm not an electrician but sounds like you have a short/poor ground in that circuit..

They just finished it. Something with a starter bolt ground on the heat shield. Here’s what was said on the paper work

1. VERIFIED CONCERN. UPON ARRIVAL FOUND NO VOLTAGE GOING TO STARTER RELAY PIN 30. FOUND THAT FUSE 07 OPEN. REPLACED 30 AMP FUSE. VEHICLE STARTED. TEST DROVE VEHICLE. UPON RECHECK VEHICLE WOULD NOT START BACK UP. FUSE 07 OPEN. TRACED CIRCUIT BACK TO STARTER. UPON INSPECTION OF STARTER FOUND NUT SECURING POSITIVE FEED TO STARTER WEDGED INBETWEEN SIGNAL CIRCUIT AND HEAT SHEILD CAUSING SIGNAL CURCUIT TO GROUND OUT. RESECURED NUT ON STARTER AND REPLACED 30 AMP FUSE AGAIN. TEST DROVE VEHICLE. VERIFIED REPAIR. - Ok to approve *00° Time 1.8

Wow that's a fun one.

Nut came loose enough to rattle off and land on the perfect spot to ground out your starter. Electrical is fun lol.
Electricity has humbled me many times in my other life. It can do wild things that make no sense other than the once in a while you can catch the arc with your eye or meter. RF has especially caused me some giant headaches dealing with MRI scanners.
Glad they got it fixed quickly for you!
