I know this isn’t 6.2/6.4 related so if not allowed please delete with my apologies.

Im not yet in any Ram forums but my daughter just bought new 2022 with the 5,7L. Have read tons of info about the lifters on these motors and wanted to ask advice from the fine folks in here. Is there anything I can do besides regular oil changes and routine maintenance to limit chances of having issues? I already told her to not sit with truck idling for long periods but sure she will ignore that lol.

What about a synthetic oil with added zinc like valvoline or an additive?

I think Penzoil and AMSoil probably make some of the best stuff out there. Use one of their synthetics and you should be fine. RacerX did a video on this on YouTube, and others have as well. Some of the ticks are completely harmless; others spell serious trouble, but by and large these fatal issues are rare.

The tick primarily comes from the MDS from what I've seen. Keep up with oil maintenance is step one. I'd suggest a tune to turn the MDS off if it wasn't a new vehicle.

For our 5.7. I noticed things were better when we didn't let the vehicle sit for more than a couple days not driven.

Overall, I wouldn't stress to much over it. It's common but not as common as the message boards make it seem. Especially on a well taken care of car.

The latest and greatest lifter update occurred in early 2019. New trucks started getting the lifters that January, everything else by that March. The new parts superseded ALL previous lifters in ALL models, 2005 - 2021. Not sure about 2022 yet. Most of the stuff on the internet WRT lifter problems were pre 2019.

Like said, change oil at recommended intervals and you should be fine. 2019 and up police vehicles are not reporting problems like in the past. Those cars idle alot!

FWIW, Dodge never really admitted that there was a lifter problem. They just changed the part without acknowledging any problems.

My 16' Ram 5.7L developed the Hemi tick at startup around 45k, switch to Pennzoil full synthetic and its now at 75k, no more tick. Try Pennzoil full synthetic like Citrus recommended. Worked for me.

Another way to quiet the tick is to periodically "let the big dog eat." Leave it in 2nd and wind it out to the rev limiter. Do that every so often to ensure the cam slings enough oil up into the lifters. Should keep things lubed up. The "bad" Hemi tick is mainly caused by prolonged low RPM use and/or prolonged idling. The engine needs high RPMs to sling oil into the lifters.

My habit with a new vehicle is to change the oil early and sort of often. For my Hellcat the oil was changed at around 500 miles, again at 2K miles (end of "break in") and then once more at 5K miles. Thereafter every 5K miles (or 6 months as called for by Dodge).

Oh the oil used is Pennzoil 0w-40. My advice is use the oil the factory calls for. Use no additives. Zinc (ZDDP) only works when the lack of oil and high pressure cause the ZDDP to form a glass like layer on the metal like the cam lobe. But the problem is the glass like layer breaks up rather quickly and as the particles of material fall away they carry with them base metal. This is wear and the loss of metal also affects the surface finish and can negatively affect lubrication.

I only owned the Hellcat for 33 months and 27.4K miles but I have done the above, or something close to it, for a number of new cars which I drove to 150K miles or beyond (317K miles) with no engine issues.

With my new Scat Pack I changed the oil at around (very roughly) 1500 miles. The oil on the dipstick didn't really start to go "dark" until then. The Hellcat oil on the dipstick was dark at around 500 miles. With only 7500 miles on the car since I bought it Nov 2020 it has had 3 more oil changes to adhere to the 6 month oil change schedule.

By habit I try to avoid idling the engine whenever possible. Not so much concerned about wear but gas mileage. But even with normal driving/use one would be surprised at how much private passenger vehicle engines idle. (I worked on automotive test equipment and this involved trip/data loggers which among other things tracked idle time.)

Just keep the oil reasonably fresh and use the right oil and take it easy on the engine until it is up to temperature and with a bit of luck the engine will be fine.

It's just a crap shoot whether you get the tick or not, obviously everything mentioned is good for your engine but I did all those things and still had the tick, more like a sewing machine sound actually. Very annoying and the 5.7L seems the most prone to having this issue.

It's just slop in the valvetrain and with no adjustable valvetrain, there's not much you can do. Dodge even authorized for M6 cars that they could use the Pennzoil 0W-40 but no difference. One guy decided to try slightly longer pushrods to take up a little more slack and that did the trick, no more tick!

And it really stinks on new cars because they're usually quiet until 2-3,000 miles and that's when you will get it, if you make it past that you're probably gonna be OK. And so may people calling it the "Hemi tick" seems to normalize and justify it and what I'm talking about is not normal. If you can hear it from the driver's seat it's an issue yet most people and nearly every dealer will tell you it's normal and it just shouldn't be there.

I get some tick on startup in my 6.4, but it’s not loud enough to hear from inside the car, and it goes away after about 30 seconds… so it might just be that manifold issue that goes away once the metal expands from heat. The engine pulls like a freight train and the car has been excellent with 1 year and 10k miles. If it hadn’t, I probably wouldn’t be upgrading to a RE for my DD.
