hy·per·mil·ing (ˈhīpərˌmīliNG) noun: the practice of making adjustments to a vehicle or using driving techniques that will maximize the vehicle's fuel economy.

In response to recent posts about rising gas prices and its effects on our driving habits, I thought I’d post my dirty little secret: how I get the greatest gas mileage out of my Redeye.

First a disclaimer… I don’t always hypermile the Redeye, but sometimes I do and maybe some of you might find these tips useful.

1. I drive in ECO mode. There is some debate about whether ECO mode actually results in higher MPGs, but that’s what I do.

2. I use cruise control as much as possible. It will engage at any speed above 20 MPH and I have used it at every speed multiple of 5 between 20 and 90 MPH.

3. Avoid using the accelerator or break pedal as much as possible. This requires that you anticipate traffic patterns and use the Set+, Set-, Resume, and Cancel buttons on the cruise control rather than your feet.

4. Cancel the cruise control using the Cancel button and coast toward a stop before applying the breaks.

5. Use the Resume cruise control button and let the car accelerate up to speed on its own.

6. Wait until the next downhill to increase your speed. Increasing your speed on an uphill maximizes fuel consumption.

The maximum average MPG I’ve been able to achieve on a trip door-to-door is 26 MPG. That’s not bad for a 3.09 Redeye that’s rated for 13 City 15 Combined and 21 Highway.

What are your hypermiling tips and best results?

Damn, and I thought that this had something to do with gaslighting....... Good tips for sure. I got one of these to live time monitor spark knock and run low octane gas. E-15, 88 0ctane is the lowest price around here.

Cruise control does nothing for saving gas, in fact it will potentially burn more trying to maintain the speed.
Cars are least efficient when changing speed. Most people cannot/do not maintain a constant speed while driving. The constant accelerating and decelerating around their desired speed increases fuel consumption. Modern cars are designed to adjust parameters so as to burn the least amount of fuel when the environment is as constant as practicable.

Not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing PP. On a long straight Cruise Control would probably be more efficient, driving on I5 or on the winding hilly roads we have here gobbles up gas, especially with the stupid 25 mph speed limits. Mostly not laying on the gas when you accelerate will save the most fuel, the engine wind up and running full open drains the tank. Curious to know what the RE fuel consumption is as it has two injectors and pumps instead of one on the regular HC.

Which is what the cruise control attempts to do.

Speed = Distance / Time

OK. Great point. I guess I should state that my hypermiling goal is to minimize fuel consumption without sacrificing desired speed, distance ,or time. So, slowing down, driving less, or driving longer are not viable options for saving gas in my book.

ROFLMAO. You guys are killing me. So let me get this straight. You took the best looking girl home from the prom and you only want to kiss her hand at the front door and say good night?

Son you got to go further than that.

What's the point in having a Hellcat!?!? Drive it like it was built to be driven!
Like anything else, it's just a game, and fun for me because I set a personal best and try to beat it. :)

I don't hypermile exclusively or even principally. I started this thread as a light hearted gesture and maybe to help anyone that might want to get better gas mileage from their Hellcat from time to time. I am financially secure now, but I wasn't always and I have the residual mindset that whatever I don't spend on things that are unimportant to me now, I can choose to save, spend, invest, or do with as I please later.

I drive my DHC like a GT V6 99% of the time. It still gets 12 MPG. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Your DHC:oops: gets the MPG as my wife's R/T Durango.

Here's the average mileage from my previous HC while on a long trip a few years back. 90% of the miles was all highway with cruise control on most of the time. I thought it was amazing considering its a 707HP car. I've not taken a long trip like that with the Redeye yet to see what it will do. .... gotta love modern technology.

- But then again...couple years ago I bought a 2020 Toyota Tundra 4x4 double cab pickup with the I-Force 5.7 V8 that's thirsty as hell. The best highway mileage it's gotten so far is 16.5 MPG. And city driving is much worse....around 10-12 MPG. It has a 38 gallon tank too!! ...so unless I'm hauling my boat or need to haul stuff somewhere, it stays in the garage a lot right now.

- Back when I was a teenager in prehistoric times, I used to own a '72 Charger with a 318 2 barrel carb (a whopping 150HP) - and the best it could ever get was 21 MPG. And it could only get that doing 55 MPH on the highway with a tail wind. Of course, that got a bunch worse when I dropped in a 360 in the car with a big carb, cam, headers etc...
