As title mentioned, I bought a Redeye with "49 State" emission standard back in June. I paid the taxes and fees in CA, passed SMOG test, and got the car registered with no problem. Two months later, I got a call from the DMV asking me to redo the VIN Verification, with the purpose to double check the "Emisson Control Information Label". Obviously if I show up with the label I have right now I will lose my registration.
I spent a lot of effort looking around the country and finally found the perfect Redeye for me, and already spent 6k on full body XPEL ppf, tints, and ceramic coating. Right now I feel like I may be forced to sell my dream car instead of driving it. 😢
What are the options for me if I want to keep this car and drive it in California? Here are some ways I've thought of.
1. Since the DMV seems to decide whether a car complies with CA emission standards based on checking that emissions label under the hood, can I buy a CA compliant label and slap it on the car? From my understanding, there is no way to tell if a hellcat is 50 or 49 state legal other than looking at the sticker. (I could be wrong, and I do not encourage anyone to do this, but if anyone has a CA compliant label in stock please hit me up 😁) I found the emission labels on Mopar online shop, there are two versions 68551467AA and 68551468AA. One of them is probably 50 state and the other one 49 state, but I got my orders cancelled multiple times since dealerships don't have it in stock.
2. I can also give up on registering the car in California and try to register the car under a Montana LLC, but that is still shady practice and technically not allowed here.
3. 49 state cars can actually be registered in CA if it has 7500+ miles on it. I'll have to somehow drive the car for another 5000 miles, sell it to someone, buy it back, and take the depreciation. (Stupid politics
)
I see in OCMotivator's video that he was in similar situation as me, but instead of buying a car off the lot, he ordered it. He was able to return the car to the dealership since apparently dealerships are not allowed to sell 49 state cars to CA residents. I'm not sure if I can still return the car at this point with 2k miles on it. I want to keep this car and returning it would not be good for me and the dealership. Maybe I can work something out like trading the car in and placing another order on a 2023 model.
Anyway, it's also really odd that Dodge is making 49 state legal cars in 2022, maybe it's time for a "Charger SRT Daytona Banshee". 🤡
I hope this post will help Hellcat lovers from making the same mistake. If you have been in the same situation and any idea on what is the best way for me to keep the car, please leave a comment below. 🙏
