If you want to test your car without fear of huge legal consequences, here is an opportunity. Loring Timing Association (LTA) holds 2 events this year on a 2.5 mile runway of a deactivated SAC base. They time vehicles at 1mi and 1.5mi. If you have an itch, this will certainly satisfy, and at a price much lower than the ticket you would get attempting this on a public hgwy!

I did this for the first time last Sept and did 173.537 in the 1mi in a stock Challenger M6 (except for 3.90 and 305 tires). Since then, I have absolutely zero urge to test the limits of my car on public roads. I know I’m going back, and I expect to do a little better!

LTA has a vehicle class just for us called SUPERCAR. It is for modern super high performance stock vehicles designed and built by major mfrs for these speeds. Visit the website and review the rules for the SUPERCAR class as well as the general rules. I do not speak for LTA but it is my understanding that many of the rules specific to SUPERCAR are an “exception to” rather than “in addition to” the general rules. For example, roll cages and 4-point harnesses are not required in SUPERCAR. (At least, not last year.) If you show up with a stock HC, you should have no problem. I did see somewhere a clause that gives them the right to refuse modified cars, but I think if you did a pulley and injectors, you should be ok. Again, I do not speak for them. Their primary concern is safety.

I have been doing firearms competition for nearly 50 years and I am very accustomed to the dead serious, no nonsense tolerated atmosphere I saw at LTA. You can, and people have died at these events. Though my exposure to the guys at LTA has been very limited, they seem very nice and helpful, but they are always dead serious, and blunt when necessary. The last thing anyone needs is a yahoo running everything for everybody, or worse.

Try it, it will be something you remember forever!

What safety ppe is required for this? Other than obvious helmet.
If you have a stock (or mostly stock) HC you need very little. Non-synthetic clothing, take all the loose crap out of the car, SUPERCAR class was designed for us, please check the rules on the website for all the details.

I received word that they are currently looking at loosening restrictions on mods (no details yet).

I can imagine. Are you going this year?
Registered and paid for both!

There is currently a question as to whether they will hold the Sept event. If they don't hit their minimum by June 1 they will cancel Sept. I hope I can stir some interest and get some people to commit so they don't cancel. If they hit the minimum it could be a great event because the implication would be that it would not be crowded! :)

Shoot, well I can’t really sign up until my car actually gets delivered but assuming it does in the near future, I’ll see what I can do about occupying a slot.

The Sept event is probably the one you need, it'll give you time for a full and proper break-in.

I'm not sure why a street car fee is $150, but the supercar fee is $400, do they put $250 more safety equipment on the track when those car run?...I'd like to try it but not sure its worth the $400 for 5 runs
Do you think maybe it is related to the liability?

Hell, I think $400 was a bargin for 173!!! Tell us what that would cost if you got caught doing that on a public hgwy!

I did 8 runs in the 1 day I was there, it was not crowded. :):):)

I'm sure they would use liability as an excuse for the increase in price, but in reality what are they liable for? They are not going to cover you, your car, or anything you break or hit if you do wad it up out there. Don't get me wrong I'm all for this event and events like this, i'm just trying to justify the price to myself, out loud, on a public forum

Then maybe consider how much it may/would cost you doing this somewhere else? Simply look at your options and pic the best one! :)

I picked this, and was very happy! $400!?!?!? What!?!?!? Would you rather forgo this and let the $ go to your heirs??? See you there!!! ;)

The street car class for a $150 is limited to 5 runs total. The $400 fee for supercar is for unlimited runs for 4 days . There are usually Very short lines or no lines you will get as many runs as you want. You are also able to run much higher speeds in super car versus the street car class. I will also post the rules since they are difficult to Locate on the website.

5.K SUPERCAR
A. Supercar Class is designed in order allow late model vehicles to enjoy a safe
environment for motorsports fans to experience Land Speed Racing.
B. These requirements serve as an addendum to the full requirements and rules
outlined in the Loring Timing Association Rules and Records. All competitors
shall read the preface and section 1 at a minimum to familiarize themselves
the requirements and procedures of the LTA.
C. Be Advised: Any incident arising from vehicle racing is generally not covered
by vehicle insurance. This can include collision, property, and liability. We
strongly recommend that participants check with their carrier or agent for
advice.
5.K.1 Class Rules:
A. This class participates in timing at the length of 1 mile. Failure to decelerate after 1 mile
may be grounds for dismissal from the event.
B. Vehicle speed is strictly limited to 175 mph. Failure to comply with this limit may be
grounds for immediate dismissal of the team from the event.
C. Heavily modified vehicles may be required to compete under the LSR rules.
5.K.2 - Classes:
A. Muscle Cars - Camaros, Hellcats, BMWs, Mercs, Mustangs etc.
B. GT - Porsches, Corvettes etc.
C. Exotics - GTRs, Audi R8, Ferrari, Lambo etc.
5.K.3 – Safety Equipment:
A. HELMET: Proper fitting full face helmet that meets SNELL 2010, 2015, or 2020.
B. EYE PROTECTION: Shatterproof glasses are required in absence of visor.
C. CLOTHING: Non-synthetic fabric clothing completely covering arms, torso, and legs, full
coverage footwear and leather gloves (minimum) are required.
D. TIRES: DOT-approved which meet or exceed OEM speed rating in good condition are
required.

I am presently working with the LTA To revise some of the supercar rules. I expect the 175 mile per hour in one mile to be higher. A modified Hellcat will not be an issue.

You're in Detroit, right? Long drive, about 1k mi each way. IRS figures reimbursement on a sensible car is about $0.56/mi so the cost of owning a HC must be easily over $1/mi. That $400 will be one of your lesser expenses. I'm not sure I'd drive that far for this unless I had other things planned along the way.

It would also be a 10hr. jaunt for me too here on LI. Too bad, but the Mrs. would be miserable in the car for that long, and I don’t have a trailer.

That's too bad, my wife and I have a great time together on long drives, we even keep the radio off most of the time. (She's a talker...:))
