You can definitely take off in second gear with the A8....:)
The question is not if the car has enough torque to do it. No question about that. But please demonstrate it that you take off in the 2nd gear and the car is not shifting down to 1st gear. No tested automatic yet took of in 2nd gear.

I have not had a chance to try it again yet, but I will soon and post my results. I currently don't have a way to demonstrate it for posting. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it, no problem, but I am 99% positive that I have manually put it into second and floored it without it kicking down to first.

Looking forward to see it. Maybe we get lucky and someone else is testing it.

I have done this too many times to mention, did it just yesterday in fact. I started in second gear on numerous occasions. In fact motor trend got its best result 0-60 etc with second gear starts.

When you come to a stop in manual mode, it does drop to 1st (maybe not in eco mode, but I have never used it).

You just pull the paddle and it upshifts into second and will stay there whether at a light or a terst run. You can then start this way for normal city driving, or to try and accelerate quickly from second. The trans will stay in second until you shift into third.

Yep, just as VP states above and as I remembered it, I can most definitely confirm that second gear starts with the A8 are not only possible without it automatically dropping into second. I just went out and did it about a dozen times - prolly need new rear meat now, LOL:)

Not only does it work, it works VERY WELL!. If yours won't do it, I'd say it's time for a service visit - you might need that tranny flash update.

I love driving a stick but figured with 707 hp on tap, I would be driving way to aggressively and either get tickets 5 times a week or kill myself. I opted for the A8 and couldn't be happier! That transmission is awesome!

LOL... Let's see, buy a manual to make driving around the city 24/7 a lot more fun and engaging or buy an auto so the 1 or 2 times I go to the track I can be slightly faster?

Hmmmm... make driving around more fun for ME or insist on a faster ET to impress someone ELSE.

Got it. ;)

You track monkeys that run your car a billion times, auto all the way! I just never understood people buying a car with options they'll only see the benefit of on rare occasions.

Now, if you ENJOY auto and can't be bothered to shift yourself (and if an extra MPG will make or break you), more power to you. This whole "I want to be faster" stuff is lame though; a manual Hellcat and a good driver will still beat the snot out of most any car on the road you're likely to encounter.

I bought this car for the ultimate driver's experience and an auto completely disconnects me from that.

You can keep the 8 speed.

Perfect response.... These A8 guys act like the M6 is a slug or something... Car and Driver were the only ones to test both the A8 and M6... Their results? The M6 was 2 tenths slower, but ran THE SAME TRAP SPEED...

Like Ive said before, all these guys saying they bought the A8 because "its faster" , please post time slips of all your track days.. Because I can almost guarantee 9 of 10 NEVER see the track.

Id like to take a couple of these guys for a ride in my M6... 45mph in second gear, a little rev and dump the clutch with the drag radials on... Then have them tell me my car is "slow"...lol

I go with the manual for the driving fun. I am tired of the atutomatic being most of the time in the wrong gear, stuck in gears, not shifting up, shifting down when not needed, takes to long to shift, etc. Also automatic does not allow over jumping gears or taking off in 2nd (may needed depending on road condition).

The only automatic I love is the one in my old Mercedes Benz from 1968 which is a mechanical one. Have not found a newer car which holds up against it. Just my opinion.

Looking forward to the report of A8 and M6 compare.
I love my M6. I don't drive in stop and go traffic and I just tear around town. I'm not sure it's as fast as the new A8, but I enjoy it!

Coke! No Pepsi....
Dr.Pepper fan myself. That being said, I have always driven Manuals but ordered an A8 for this car. My current car is an 09 R/T with the M6 and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it, BUT.......I had left knee surgery a couple months back and had to drive my wifes Honda Accord for 3 weeks while I healed up and that confirmed that I made the right decision ordering the A8 on the Cat.

Nothing like driving by feel. I love feeling the car and sensing what she wants. Touch her right and she responds! That's why I ordered a MT6. No dead stick for me! Hell that ain't half bad, maybe I should become a smut novel writer.....

That is what hubby said till I showed him it is not true but you can prove me wrong. When you have your A8 HC record it that you take of in the second gear. I am pretty sure as soon you get on the gas the car shifts in the 1st gear. Would like to see your recording showing you take off in 2nd gear and the car is not shifting down to 1st.

I have played around with the automatic in different cars. Used the manual shifting to see if I can take of in second gear and every car shifted into the 1st. Car showed second gear till I went on the gas and boom there was the 1.
Funny my 2013 srt charger will launch in 2nd

The ONLY coke I will concede to liking is cherry coke (which we can't get in Canada) I buy that stuff EVERY time I'm in America town!

That and coke from a fountain (restaurant) is delicious. Cans or bottled coke sucks for whatever reason.

Pepsi is consistent no matter how you buy it, it always tastes great.

I think Coke has more of a cult following, people like it just because it's Coke (even though the Pepsi taste challenge proved way more people picked Pepsi as their favorite... LOL)
I'm a Pepsi and manual guy as well. However, bottled Coke from Mexico actually taste awesome!
