I recently purchased a new black key for my HC online. I went to take it to my local lock Smith for programming. He used the latest equipment, but for some reason it would not let him program it. Is there a security feature that only dodge can program it?

I bought a black FOB from Original Mopar Parts & Accessories | Mopar Estores. There was no issue programming it but it's a genuine OEM part. I've heard warnings that many knockoffs purchased on eBay are unprogrammable.

Has to be OEM.
Hellcats can only accept a total of 5 fobs to be married into the system - ever. (Other models are more) so its not something to just do at random.
Dodge Dealer is only one to properly program RED fobs, least in the past, perhaps now its also the black fobs, so that comes as no surprise. Most dealers wont touch a non-oem fob and they are prone to all sorts of issues.

What is a surprise, is why people cheap out on something as majorly important as the actual fob, which operates & secures their $60-$100k car!

I think the five fob ever thing only pertains to the new security update. Unless I’m mistaken you can program more than that unless you have the new update done. Now you have me wondering.

I had an issue with a fob that was partly defective. Dealer programed it but it had to be held to the start button to start the car. Finally found a dealer with a tech that knew his stuff and figured it out. He got me a new fob and I’ve had no issues. It has to be oem and never previously used. He said I could have up to five fobs at any one time.
My question is, why a black fob? 🙄

Not sure it makes that much difference. They can smoke tires with 500hp and have fun with it almost as much as with 700hp.
Guess I’ve never really left it at any service department. I make appointments, wait for it, and can always hear whenever that monster starts up😁😁

I went round & round thru all of this in 2018, well before any recent security update, when my widebody only arrived with one red fob.
( was a nationwide shortage at the time). The following applies to SRT Hellcat variants only:
Fob has to be OEM and New.
Once a fob has been married to a car (vin), it cannot be reused, so buying a "used red one" off ebay is not going to work. Repop are marginal - at best.
ALL Hellcat systems only allow up to 5 total fobs, then the system locks out any future attempts.
There may have been a work around exploit possible in the past to circumvent the total allotment on SRT hellcat models, (as other dodges can have up to 7, 10 & 12 more) but it was not something a dodge dealer could do.
The security update simply locked it all down to as it supposed to be, regardless of a previous used exploit to get additional fob married into the system beyond 5.
