No need to drain the Oil Cooler.
Drain oil pan. Remove oil filter.
Replace filter. Fill with 7 quarts oil

OK- so I had the dealer do my first oil change yesterday, the oil techs 😂😂 knew nothing about the oil cooler. After going to the office they checked with a Machanic and he said yes to drain the cooler also(he came over and supervised). knowing they replaced oil with 7qrts I checked my oil today and it appears to be a little low(oil comes to the bottom of checkered line). Appearantly I need to add a 1/2 quart

No rational manufacturer would make a drain that inaccessible to an average shop if they really expected an owner to drain it or have it drained. Most of us throw such large amounts of good oil away, it just can’t matter. Military or not.

I wouldn't say it's inaccessible. If me, a service disabled guy can do it himself with no problem whatsoever... If a shop has a problem accessing the oil cooler you need to stop going to Jiffy Lube.

That's preferable to not draining the cooler and the brain dead techs adding 7qts and over-filling it, which ends up damaging the O2 sensors and the cats with all that lovely blow-by.

Absolutely drain the oil cooler for the same reasons you drain the oil pan.

Torque to 20 Ft Lbs; oil pan drain plug uses the same torque value.

2016 Hellcat; 4 10 mm hex head bolts to take rear cover off; 9 push pins and 5 7mm hex head bolts to take front cover off. Takes like 3 minutes if that. To not do it the right way is just plain lazy, Especially when you already have to take the four bolts and the rear cover off anyway to drain the oil pan and take the filter off.

I rest my case. 9 push pins. Stock up.

I take it to the dealer and they also drain the cooler. But another time I took it to another Dodge dealer that was closer to home and they didn't know what the hell I was talking about. I don't like taking it to them but I can't do it myself for health reasons. You would think they would know how to take of my baby for God's sake lol.

I don’t get the bitching about the fasteners, it takes maybe 2-3 extra minutes to remove them and it’s also nice to be able to take a good look around while under there.

The factory service manual says to drain it until there is less than 1 drop per second, then torque to 20 ft lbs like mentioned above.

It also says to fill the oil filter prior to install, which takes almost half a quart on its own.

For my 2016, I fill the filter and pour the rest of the the oil into the engine for a total of 7 quarts based on chatting with others who are smarter on this than I.
