Just changed my oil for the first time since I purchased it in Apr this year. It’s a 2015 and the dealer I picked it up from said it had just had a fresh oil change. Pulled the filter off and it has this filter on it. Is this a filter made in 2016? Could they have just drained and filled and not changed the filter? The car only has 22k on it and I have only put 1k on it

the couple unused filters i have say 2019 and i bought them last year. Could be old stock... but seems a bit suspect... cut it open and see what kind of crap, if any, is stuck to the pleated filter.

Maybe the person bought a few and just put them on the shelf to use when needed.
Nobody just drains oil and doesn't change a filter....

I think you got hosed and that’s the original filter, I’d cut it open as well. Use a filter cutter from summit or Jegs, 2,minutes and no added debris. I cut every filter open on all my cars, use a wide blade long snap blade knife and cut the edges to the core and pull it out and un accordion it, good ones the media is almost 6 ft long. With black gloves on in the sun squeegee between your thumb and index finger debris out of a few pleases here and there and look for “stuff” finding nothing is what’s wanted. If the filter is black already it’s most likely unchanged.

How did the oil look? Secondly, do you trust the dealer that changed it? Thirdly, I wouldn't cut it open. What will you do it it had dirt in it?????????? What you don't know can't hurt you.

One of my previous cars the factory called for 15K mile oil changes and 30K mile filter changes.

I decided to change the oil every 5K miles. So when it was time for its factory scheduled 15K mile oil change at the dealer the service manager told me they change the oil filter at the same time they change the oil. Even the dealer didn't follow the factory guidelines regarding only changing the filter every other oil change.

I honestly do not think a dealer would tell you they changed the oil and leave a filter on there.
I think you are going way too deep into something that means nothing to you.
Its been two months since you bought it, all your going to do is have this in your mind forever.
Do yourself a favor, throw it away and live life.

Catless makes a good point. That's the copyright date. The oil filter does not have a shelf life per se unlike say foods, so there is no sell by date.

Very unlikely the service department failed to replace the filter when it replaced the oil.

If you are that OCD that the oil would be changed but not the filter what you can do going forward is use a permanent marker to write the date/miles on the filter housing. Clean the filter housing with residue free cleaner like brake cleaner from an aerosol can. Wipe the a clean paper towel.

This is what you will see once cut out and stretched, this a Mobil1 filter from my 4Runner after 3000 miles. You want to inspect what you see on the pleats then try snd squeeze super fines out of the pleats
If you know what you are looking for this might be a good idea, just make sure you don't add metal to it when you cut it open. Yes, looks like a copyright date, unlikely anyone screwed a HC owner out of a $6 filter on a $100 oil change, and even if they didn't replace the filter on one change, no big deal. Filters are so good and oil is so good these days, we could double or triple our milage/time between changes and likely there would be no change in wear or failures. Besides, 99% of the time we do not drive these cars to their capability.

I had a dealer do this to a company car I had that had to go to a shop for service per the lease. They changed the oil filter every other oil change, I marked them. Also when they changed the spark plugs they left the 2 hard ones to get at alone. I know all this because I bought the car when the lease was out and found the plug issue when it started to have a miss and I changed the plugs and found 100,000+ mile original OEM plugs still in 2 cylinders. I Don’t trust many to do shit correctly that their getting paid by the hour to do or worse yet salary or doubly worse by billing time, they do 4 hours of actual work and get 12-14 hours of pay for the 8 hour day. I know a few dealer mechanics that do this day in day out. Not on my cars!!

Proper filter cutter with a shape roller blade leaves absolutely no metal, cuts them open like a can opener, works just like a tubing cutter. You can tell a good filter from a junk one just by how flimsy the can is, you’d be shocked how shitty some filters are. Some of the best in my opinion are the Mobil1 Full Synthetic ones followed by K&N filters but the K&N ones use a coarser filter media and doesn’t catch as small of fines as the Mobil 1’s do. I’ve cut many many many different brands apart in my lifetime, like probably 1000+ filters in my life, do it on all my cars, always have, yes, I’m a bit anal lol. Today it took me 8 hours to change 8 valve springs because each one had to measure what came out, new going in, and clean and polish the valves before putting them back in. It’s just the right way to do things in my book at least Right down to calibrating the scale before weighing the shit lol

I guess you are not bored much! LOL!

I don't know anyone other than you that has, or would ever want a oil filter cutter! LOL! You are a crazy man, which makes you so informative! :) I figured anyone else (like me) would just hack it open!

Your story is the reason why I do 95% of the work myself. One time I had an oil change and when I got home I saw the dirty filter. They redid the oil change but I guess they play the odds of who will check? But a HC?!?! Might be foolish, but I’d like to think…. Yes, it is a tough business, but it is even tougher when you get caught doing this crap. For what, $4 their cost? Sad. But I think the OP is ok.

So basically K&N's oil filters are somewhat like their air filters, they keep the larger pieces out. Such as rods, valves, and lifters?

Lots of folks on the Bob Is The Oil Guy site cut oil filters and post pics. Easy way to become a local hero by buying a cutter and posting frequently.:)

I’m just the opposite lol, 99% of the time I’m on it when I’m out prowling with it. I change my oil about every 1500-2000 miles in the cat, it gets dirty looking out it comes. If I’m going to the track it gets fresh oil before it goes and when I’m done and get home filter comes off and yep cut open looking for issues in the pleats. If all is good new filter goes on (filled with fresh oil of course) and I’ll run that oil until it starts to dark looking on the stick. If it’s dark on the stick it’s black in the pan. Oil and filters are cheap insurance.
