To have metal filings in there is one thing, but if you have discrete pieces of metal/material, it doesn't take too much of a brain-wizard to make the determination of component failure...

Have you seen this metal first hand?

No I haven't drained it myself, I am just hoping that with all of the noise and clunking it is making when moving the wheels on the lift that it will be blatantly obvious that it is junk. Even though I showed them it is junk by doing 1 wheel burnouts with the tech in the car.

Well the tech drained the fluid into a clean container and it was very black and filled with a lot of small metal pieces. Right around 1 quart of fluid came out and from the info the tech had it was supposed to be 1.16, so it may or may not have been low. The tech has recommended a new diff to STAR?? and supposedly the regional SRT rep is somewhere in the area and they are calling him today to discuss / see if he would like to look at it. They are supposed to let me know the next step today.

I did find out from the tech that the service managers were trying to say that they put 2 different diffs in them and I got the non-limited slip one. Jeeze even the service managers don't know about the cars, this isn't a V6. Luckily the tech seems to know his shit well and seems to be trying hard to get me a full replacement. They are still trying to tell me that the driveshaft is on back order and they can't get it (same for the diff when it gets approved).

To be continued...

So now this regional SRT rep has turned in to an "SRT Engineer" (i doubt it) that is visiting the dealership this Tuesday to program another vehicle??? and he wants to take a look at mine. Why am I having such a hard time getting my dealership to do warranty work?

Probably because, like most dodge dealers, they suck. There's only a handful of dealers I would say operate at a normal business level. Most are on par with government.

SRT rep only had my car on the lift for about 1 minute. He had the level 3 tech hold the one wheel while he spun the one on our side. It started to grab then let go and spun freely while the level 3 techs wheel did not move. Then they did the same for the other side. He then said yep that's junk you're getting a new diff. Also he was able to locate 3 of them that the dealer couldn't when they told me they were on backorder last week and it should be here by Friday. The drive shaft was already on order and is supposed to be in tomorrow, so I am waiting till they can do everything at once next week. He did say something about axles as well, but I'm slightly confused on what exactly he said. Sounded like he said it was coming as an assembled unit with diff and axles and I think someone else here on the forum had theirs replaced the same way. I should have an entire new drivetrain from the tranny back next week.

As of now I am the only one who I know of that has blown out the rear.

This unit ( according to tech, I have not been inside one) is clutch style and they have had varying quality on the clutch pack assembly.

From what I felt and the sounds it made before and after replacement I can say the car felt weak and would chatter under acceleration before and sooooo smooth and strong after ( until wheel hop) which is a whole other gripe.

But put the car on a 2 post and rotate a rear tire, have someone on the other side feel the engagement of the opposite side. ANY slack, bumping or non engagement .......replace the rear under wrty.

make sure the parts dept lists your part order as VOR ( vehicle off road)....parts will arrive in a week or less and the rear takes less than an hour to replace.
Well you can add me to the list as the second and right you were on how the SRT rep did his test to finally approve my replacement. I believe someone else told me to check this torque differential from wheel to wheel in another thread with a torque wrench, but mine is so bad they could do it by hand.

FYI I was the one telling you that's How I check my C5 race cars, hope it helped.
GLAD they are taking care of you!!! Wait till you get to do a REAL burn out in your cat mine is too much fun and NEVER EVER does a single digger... even when exiting a turn.

He may do the axles. But they are not needed. The Diff is replaced as an assembly and the axles can be reused.

There has been a lot of confusion about the Diffs. Especially the Autos. These Guys are ordering the one ending with AD and it is on back order. No telling when it might come in. They could have the dealer do the locate on an AC and buy it from someone who has it in stock. Oh well...........The Dealers can get parts 2 ways. 99% of the time they will get it from Chrysler out of their warehouse. That is what your dealer did. But they also can search the PN and locate it anywhere in the system including dealer stock. Then they would have to get it from the other dealer if not in a warehouse. Sounds like the SRT rep found some in dealer stock and is getting one of them. Or he had more pull to get one from the assembly plant like was said. You can still score NOS parts by doing a Dealer Locate.

With my Diff I am able to break free and re torque all my lug nuts on both back wheels with the tires off the ground (engine off,Trans in park). So, yes that is a way to test it. Leave one tire on the ground and one off the ground and it should take something like 160 foot pounds (on the axle nut of the wheel off the ground) to break the clutches in the diff free. That is why I am not so fast to add friction modifier to my Diff. It does not call for it so why add something that will make it less effective. I want that ***** to lock up tight.

I would 100% try to get them to put in a 3.90, but it sounds like it is too late? Might be worth a call first thing in the morning. I would have asked the SRT rep face to face when I had the chance. Like the 3.09's in the Auto's, the 3.90 in a manual is the shit.

Good luck.

He did say that the diff part number has been superseded 3 times, is that where the AD comes from?
While I agree with you that the 3.90 would probably be awesome for drag racing, I am of the opinion that the gearing for the M6 is just all out of whack. I would like a shorter first gear but I would like a taller 4th-5th-6th and I already think running at 2 grand at 70-72mph on the highway sucks. I would prefer the gear ratios from the 392.

AD is the last two numbers of the Part Number. That is a reference to the 3.09 Diff that everybody is putting in the A8 Hellcats. The hands down BEST thing I ever did to my car.

Yes that last digit in the PN should coincide with the number of times the Part Number has been changed/updated. For instance I have a 2016 Challenger Hellcat and the sticker on my OEM driveshaft that was factory installed ends in AF.

The PN can be superseded for various reasons and does not mean that there was a physical change to the part, but could include an upgrade to the part. It could also be because the part is sourced form a different vendor, stocked in a different bin at the factory/warehouse, has different packaging etc.

Also, AB can replace AA, but AA cannot always replace AB.

Car is done, I dropped it off last night and just got the call. New diff and driveshaft. I won't be picking it up until after work, so I'll post results later tonight or tomorrow.

Give that new Differential some miles before you crank too hard on it...

I should try a donut right in the lot. If it works, I leave happy, if not tell Dodge I want a buy back...

Sure hope they fixed the chatter/whine issues in the '17s. Changing out diff fluid is getting to be a habit with me

Well the whine is gone and the diff is definitely better. I can feel both tires grab quickly, but on one left handed drift attempt it did start out as one wheel and eventually grabbed both after about 10 feet of peg legging. I didn't try an all out donut, but I'm going to take my original stance from this thread and say why in the hell don't we have a locking rear instead of the stupid clutch type LSD.

I had to go drift my GMC truck around this weekend on the damp roads to get my fix that I've been missing out on during this whole debacle.
