The problem seems to be that there is insufficient travel in the present setup to allow the clutch to fully engage. It is "topping out" in its travel before it is applying full clamp load.
I think the solution is simple, if not inexpensive: Take the clutch to someone else and have a throwout bearing installed that is sufficiently adjustable, and with sufficient travel, to allow full engagement before you turn your friction material into a neat little pile of dust in the bellhousing.
My guess based on lack of on-the-ground knowledge is that they got a normal, stock TOB and tossed it on there, threw the thing together without making any attempt at making sure the clutch could actually go through its normal range of motion.
In other words, it does not sound as if the clutch was properly set up.
PS: "setup" is a noun. "set up" is a compound verb.
