Does anyone have input on preferred brands?
I had an Escort custom installed in a previous car. It worked well but had to be close to my computer to get updates. I called them recently as a former customer and they were not too thrilled to hear from me and did not offer anything special as a past customer. I went to a professional installer and they prefer the k40 unit.
Does anyone have experience with that unit?

I would avoid the K40 unit. It often benchmarks low on frequency detection and distance to detect (both dash and integrated install). I have the integrated escort product and also like their 360 dash product. Valentine is a good choice too. Check out some of the videos from vortex radar - he does great reviews (YouTube or his website).

I suggest what I do whenever my finger is trembling on clicking a "buy" button like the elder Salamanca on Breaking Bad: I do research, research, and more research.

If you are needing to go fast for your chosen occupation/activity, there is more you can do to minimize your signature. It just depends on how much looks matter to you.

If a Hellcat was being built for stealth, it would look somewhat different to what it currently does. A radar detector interface that disables the rear brake lights entirely when it chimes and a couple seconds after can allow you to slam on the brakes without giving away that you have a detector, visually. It would be nice if someone made such a device.

I had a K40 in my ‘15. As soon as the warranty was over it quit working. They have no mercy, wanted money for a new unit. As is said above for the money, there is better, do more research. Some may chime in here and help you.

Used to have an Escort Redline. - Overpriced POS. I now have a Uniden R3. Much better! And the new Uniden R7 is even better.
The older Escort Redline wasn't that great but as a previous R7 owner, the Escort Max 360c and Max 360c Redline are both better. That being said, the R7 is a good detector, but it doesn't match the range of the Redline and it also WAY more false alerts because its filtering isn't as good.

Escort 360c is the best detector among those that are widely available, but the 360c Redline is the best available at any price and has demonstrated so by independent test reports. I have been using the 360c in my vehicles for the last 2 years, never got a ticket. I have been using the 360c Redline for about 4 months now, no tickets either.

I also give a vote to the Uniden R7. I run mostly interstate, and it picks up very well, definitely further than my older Escort Redline that I have.
Yea, the old Escort Redline wasn't great, the Max 360c and Max 360c Redline are better than the R7 and the older Escort Redline.

no one has issues with them not getting the GPS signal? I had both a new escort 360max and uniden R7 in my 2019 neither of them would get a GPS signal. switched to a gen2 v1 as that uses GPS through my phone and has been fine. I really like escorts but the no GPS is a deal breaker.

I have the Max360 and the new Max360 Redline in both cars. I do have problems in the last year with getting a GPS signal. It usually has to be on for a little bit before it picks one up. They didn't used to have that problem so I don't know what is going on. I like both of the units and think they are some of the best on the market. The Redline better be for how much it cost. LOL

I have the same issue with my 360c Redline, takes about 5-10 seconds to get a good GPS signal after startup, my 360c's don't have this issue though.

What's this all about? What's the relationship between brake lights and getting a radar based speeding ticket? Sincere question, I don't know anything about radar detectors, or evading radar speed detection.

No relationship between radar detectors and brake lights. In states where radar detectors are illegal, they have detectors that can detect your radar detector if the radar detector doesn't have a stealth mode.
