A bit of backstory, i heard some weird ticking sounds when slowing down and turning at low speeds. I look up a post on this site that pointed towards a few causes. I took my car into the closest dealer near me and they confirmed that it was the rear diff causing the issue, they also stated that it cannot be rebuilt and I needed to get a whole new one. It will take 3 weeks to order one and over $2,000 to order (I assume that doesn't include labor, etc). This seems crazy to me as it has such low miles (10,500 when purchased)

Now I am still learning about cars but does this sounds legit? I don't have a reason to distrust service departments but I wanted to know if this is something other owners had to do as well.

Secondly i noticed there is a Class Action Lawsuit around 2019 for this very issue I cant seem to find any information on the outcome.

Sounds suspect. Wonder what exactly is ticking? Differential can be rebuilt but it sounds like dealer just swaps out the whole differential. But then what if an axle is ticking? I think you may want a second opinion.

Have you checked driveshaft
I am not too mechanically sound so i did not check myself.

I couldn't tell, It sounds like rear passenger side while when I'm driving. I had a hard time describing the sound until i saw this post:

It pretty much sums up the sound I heard. Maybe it was damage beyond repair? The service department wont let me take the car as they deemed it unsafe to drive due to that issue.

If it’s clutches, it’s not serious. I had something similar on my 2015 Hellcat. Just differential clutches making a bit of noise. I replaced differential fluid and exercised the clutches in a parking lot and that took care of it. Dealer shouldn’t be able to condemn your car. You can likely continue to drive it as is. You’ll just have a little annoying ticking noise. Again. You need a second opinion.

Yeah it drives fine, It does shift hard as i drive with track mode transmission, which i think it normal?, other than the noise while corning and low speed it works.

I'll drive down there tomorrow and get some more info. I agree that they dont have that authority but maybe its liability on their part, I dont know. Id rather not deal with the hassle of dealing with another location, as the next closest is another hour.

I think a differential fluid change with the proper fluid will take care of sticking clutches. I’ll be curious as to what they try to sell you. These cars don’t need new differentials at 10K miles.

I know many of these cars had differential whine, growl, ticking, and whatever noises. Many had new differentials replaced and still had some of the same noises After replacement. I had the whine on my 2015 that I could never get rid of. But the growling and ticking was remedied with a fluid change. I had over 112K miles on that car when I sold it. I bet it’s good for another 100K miles even with the whine.

Idk the clicking i heard on mine was unusual. At this point, i already ok'd the repair and i just want the car to be in good shape. I bought it already used with 10k miles on it for a decent price so having this issue all of a sudden is saddening.

I’m thinking of a line that made Ned Beatty Famous. Hint: they were on a river.

Well let us know what they find. Any noise from these cars are unusual and unsettling. You obviously have tons of $$ to be able to give a wheelbarrow full of it to the first shop that wants it 😳

Differentials whine and grind, CV’s click, they are in both Drive Shaft and axles, I’d suspect one of them first. First off I’d be suspecting the drivers side Axle. Have someone lay in the trunk and take a drive to which you can make this noise happen and they may be able to get a better idea of the sound source, ie right side left side or center and where, more towards front or rear. Unless under warranty and the dealer is paying for all the parts playing buy, replace, drive and see can get very expensive

rear diffs don`t make click noises, diff clutches can chatter, change the fluid an add some friction modifier.
ask to see a sample of the old oil.
I think you maybe wasting your money.

My 2015 had 7000 kilometres on it when I bought it in 2018. The diff clunked and chattered going around corners. So I had the dealer change the oil and put the additive in at the first engine oil change. Diff has behaved perfectly ever since. Get the diff oil changed - if it's full of metal bits that would be sign - but it won't be and all will be well after the change.

Have you ever serviced the reea diff?

You know many vehicles with a limited slip will make noise when turning after the limited slip additive wears out. Yours is a 2016 so this could be it.

Depends on if it's been tracked or dragged with DRs or not. All it takes is 1 pass... and those '15 and '16 cars have weak rear ends.

As far as i know now, the dealer said that the only thing they can do is a complete replace. Again, id like to give the benefit of the doubt and maybe the damage was so bad that it was the only choice.
