Rear end whine fix?

This has been a common problem with many hellcats and I wanted to know if anyone has a solid solution. When the car is at 45 mph or 65 it sounds like a minor whine coming from the rear end. I give the car very little throttle and it will start to make the noise. The car has made the noise since new and I now have 6400 miles on it. I've ignored it but It is now a little worrying to me. And yes, I did break the car in correctly according to the service manual. Anyone have confirm fixes that I should try? I've heard people doing a fluid change with a friction modifier, and people going under warranty to get a new pumpkin. Thanks!

Couldn't help but notice you seem to have an alleged solution to 99.9% of all tech issues posted on this Forum.
Which leads me to my question...what exactly are your credentials? Are you an automotive, design, or mechanical engineer? Auto technician? All of the above? Or just a self proclaimed expert on everything?

As the miles increased on my 2018 Hellcat the "diff" noise got pretty loud. I spoke to a SA about this and he said I could bring the car in with some complaint about the noise and he could then have a tech add some fluid (friction modifier?) to the diff to see if this helped. If it did fine. If not this step was out of the way and I guess the diff could be replaced if the noise was bad enough to warrant it.

But I never did this. I decided to just drive the car and if the diff failed to get it fixed under warranty. But my plan was and still is to have the diff fluid changed out/replaced with fresh factory fluid at 20K miles. (The car currently has around 17600 miles on it.)

Then at around 13K miles I got a puncture in the driver side rear tire. I replaced both rear tires with the same tires as were on the car. The tires were not worn that much maybe not quite half worn (and the front and rear tire wear was even believe it or not) but with 707hp on tap I don't want a new tire on one side of the rear axle and a nearly half worn out tire on the side of the rear axle so I replaced both tires.

After having new tires installed the "diff" noise was gone. Seems the bulk of the "diff" noise was tire noise. What noise I hear now if it even comes from the diff it is not any cause for concern.

I had not had the rear end whine but I can tell you one sure way to get rid of it.

Don't use a @Per4Mance Development Diff brace launch really hard and break the Pumpkin!:LOL:;)

There are lots of thread about this and I won't say it's a common problem but there is a good percentage of those that had the problem.

I hope you get it fixed!

Plenty of 392s have this issue too, people get their rear ends replaced under warranty but the issue seems to persist. Mine does it but I don't worry too much about it. Unless I'm finding metal shavings in the fluid, I'm not going to worry about it.
I have the same issue replaced both the fluid and differential but the whine is still there...I just learned not to go 45 anymore.

Change the rear end oil..
My Demon was 5oz low when I changed mine at 700 miles.
I used Amzoil Severe Gear with Slip Lock. I just seen last week a 2018 Hellcat that was also low 4oz upon inspection and fluid change.

Mine has done that from day I picked it up. I have a 2015 now has 24,000 and has a tune still makes the same sound and never had an issue. Changed the rear end fluid every 7000 miles did not make any difference kind of sounds like the 1970 440 Six Pack I used to have.

I gotta ask how you all think you hear a whine in the rear at any speed over 40, the SC whines, the car itself growls, and the tires are always squealing. Mash the peddle harder and you will only hear the sounds of fury! Makes me smile just writing it! Good luck.

Sometimes when reading these thread on rear end whines I wonder about them and think why I don't hear anything I would complain about.
The Hellcats came off the line more of a race car.Race cars make noise. ?
Maybe I just don't have the problem with my Hellcat or maybe it's because I also drive a 3500 Ram Diesel Dually and anything is more quiet than that.

Well aware the Hellcat while probably not as close to a race as you portray it is a high performance car to be sure and will not be Lexus quiet.

Didn't expect it to be.

With a new car and becoming familiar with Hellcat while I didn't expect quiet what I did hear in some ways was more than I expected to hear.

But over time I've become more familiar with the car and the noise it makes and really while I hear the supercharger at lower speeds, and some diff whine at intermediate speeds, and will probably once again as the "new" tires wear hear tire noise at higher speeds I will know the source of the noise and not really give it much thought.

It doesn't help in my case that I do not drive the car every day and my two cars are quite different so when I return to my Hellcat it is in some ways unfamiliar to me.

@Rockster I understand your thoughts. This is especially true.

So here's an update with my current situation, I changed out my rear end fluid and like someone on this thread has said before on their demon it was in fact 5 oz low on fluid.... I replaced it with the mopar 75-140 viper fluid and mopar friction modifier. It has been 2 days and the whine is still present, and did not get quieter and now I can notice it at higher speeds. I'm going to give it a couple more days then try the amsoil gear oil. Has anyone have any input? and yes, you guys are right this noise is completely normal and you can expect this out of a 717 horse power car but I have buddies that don't have any noise at all and I guess you can say I'm a perfectionist.

Changing gear oil seldom has any effect on the whine, if you have groan or chatter around turns then the oil and additive will cure that, but whine usually more about gear lash and setup and different oil can't do anything about that.

One of my good friends is a service adviser at a local dodge dealer and they say the 392's challengers jeeps and chargers and hellcats can whine. He said its like a lottery if you get a whiny one or not. He said its normal and will do no harm. Then again he said if you do go through warranty, theres a chance you can still have a whine! So he tells me if its not to bad to deal with it.

My take is if the whine was normal then all cars would have the whine but they don't so it can't be normal.

For any dealer saying it's normal, have him pull a car off the lot and take you for a ride and if it's quiet then he owes you a new rear end.
