So was near the end of a drive last night (about 200 miles through LA) near the end i notice the steering wheel is no longer centered. Just gotta love freeways in LA. NOT!!

HCWB Charger with 2,500 miles on it. No mods, stock tires and wheels.

is there a manner which the steering wheel can recalibrated to center which does not require it to go to the dealer (and subsequent "test" drives)?

TIA

Yup. It’s calibrated electronically somehow. ;)

No... Needs an alignment... Do a Search on my name with keyword 'Alignment' to see what settings are needed. They can also check out the electric steering...

These cars also have a Steering Angle Sensor that needs checking...

Blickie, hands off the car tracks straight but the steering wheel is still off-center.

Centering the wheel manually makes the car change lanes. Does not feel nor seem like mechanical alignment. Definitely electronic steering and potentiometer feedback.

Something changed or moved if the steering wheel position was good & then changed. I trust you didn't hit anything.

These cars have a front & rear cradle & the factory has no way to align these cars after assembly. That's why Dodge pays for 1 free alignment on HCs.

Straight tracking sounds positive tho...

That’s where my logic was electronic calibration.

The electric steering is electric assist. You still have steering rack, tie rods, steering shaft, etc. If the steering wheel is off, it is mechanical.

so there is a mechanical connection?
I didn't realize you were serious. The steering wheel mounts on the steering shaft which extends down and connects to the steering rack. At either end of the steering rack are threaded tie rods that attach to the knuckles. The steering wheel centering is normally accomplished by turning the tie rods in or out.

I was serious. while not being underneath it yet, i haven‘t seen the / a shaft.

and this coming from someone who has completely replaced everything in a 63 Dodge Dart, and full suspension replacements (from steering box to wheels) included.

You should also look under the dash for a connection where the steering column/shaft goes down/thru the firewall to the steering gear.

All, so yes, the alignment issue was mechanical, not electrical as I initially thought.

all is good and was covered under warranty. Poway CDJR sent me over to Poway Nissan who did some outstanding work starting with the first two questions:

a. What, no red key? This opened up a whole conversation about performance cars previously and currently owned. Next question,

b. You want it aligned to compensate for the crown in the road? This lead to a few more minutes discussing mountain road driving specifically, Mt. Palomar.

on the double plus side, three miles to test drive and top speed of 40 mph (i know where the tech took the car and it’s reasonable for this effort, mph is lower than I might’ve driven that route ;))

all is good with the world now.
