Installed my winter project today.

Gear shift Hood Vehicle Automotive design Motor vehicle

I wanted a pistol grip shifter since about ’71 when I sat in a 340 Challenger, I thought it was really cool. I looked at what was available for the HC but didn’t like what I saw. Metal grips are out of the question, they get really hot in summer and stick to your hand in winter.

I went revolver because “pistol” grips are not optimized for your hand as they are constrained by the magazine well. Revolver grips on the other hand are designed to conform to your hand to not only absorb heavy recoil but also to prevent the grip from moving in your hand due to recoil. I have a nice wood grip with finger grooves that probably would have looked much nicer but you just can’t beat the feel of the rubber grips.

Unfortunately I have to wait a couple weeks for snow and ice to melt before I can take it out on the road. But it feels great!

Nice day today, took it out of storage for a try. At first I was disappointed. The entire pistol grip concept is different from everything I have been driving for almost 50 years! And, the exposed steel backstrap was cold, it sucked heat out of my hand making it uncomfortable to hold. I kept putting my hand on the heated wheel to warm up!

After a while I started getting used to it and it warmed up and was more comfortable to hold.

So far, I am neutral on the grip, it is very different. With a ball knob you cup your hand around it so your palm is always pushing the ball. With this, your hand position never changes so forces are in all directions. At this point, I’m not sure if this is good or bad. After maybe 1.5 hours it all started to become normal and natural. I’m going to give it more time.

My winter project next year may be milling down the steel backstrap and replacing it with plastic. I can still feel the cold backstrap in my hand!
