Hello everyone! Just joined the community and I look forward to now exploring a little more. I have a 2019 Charger Hellcat with just over 8k miles.
I’ve been following the site for awhile but unfortunately I have come across an issue I need some help with. I have done a bunch research and I cant figure out the exact issue I am having atm.
There is a ringing noise (high pitched) coming from the front of the engine. I’ve stethoscoped the s*** out of it and I think it’s an idler pulley on the supercharger drive system. I changed out the plastic idler (near alternator) on the regular accessory belt system but the noise persisted. Wondering if anyone has had an issue with this or recognizes the noise. I do not believe it is the supercharger either, but I’ve been wrong before.
Thanks!

You're not crazy I hear it, has to be a pulley or bearing you would think

When using the stethoscope the noise is most prominent on the little housing for the upper idle pulley on the supercharger system. It just doesn’t make sense with how few miles I have and it being a 2019 that one of those pulleys would be headed out the door. I haven’t seen anyone else post about the issue either. 🤔

Squirt a little something something in the idler bearing area you suspect , see if the sound changes
You will not get anything down in there without making a mess.
Take off your accessory serpentine belt, start the car, if no noise, its on that belt system.
Shut off car, do not let run.
Check the idler pulleys with your hand for bearing play.....
Your 2019 should be under warranty, just take it to the dealer.

I did take off both belts and run it for a little and I didn’t hear the noise. Problem is sometimes it takes a while for it to start making noise and I didn’t want to keep running it without the belts. I think I’ve narrowed it to that idler pulley (with the stethoscope) which will be here in a few days. If that doesn’t fix it, to the dealer I go.... which I’ve never been a fan of. Like I said before I’m just surprised that beefy supercharger idler would make noise already. And the ringing isn’t something I’ve personally heard come from bad bearings on a pulley. No grinding or that normal “roller” noise. This is a legit ringing. I appreciate the suggestions though. Still curious if anyone else has had this issue/noise.

Different issue, but on my 2020 hellcat redeye widebody, the Gates green supercharger belt just shredded for no obvious reason at 11,000 miles. Ordered the belt and when I took the accessory belt off today to get to the SC belt, both plastic pullies (the one on the accessory tensioner and the idler for same) have a noticeable bit of play. Im not sure what would be normal really, but I ordered the whole accessory tensioner because of such. The SC tensioner seems fine. Never heard any ringing or other noticeable noise prior to the belt snapping however. I know these babies are under high strain at load, but like you, I am shocked to have this issue with so few miles.
Sadly, same as you, I feel I can’t trust the dealer to play with my car for something like this, even though I have the bumper to bumper extended warranty plan. Keep us posted on what you find OP. I will do the same.

Will do. The oem supercharger idler pulley should be here Friday and I’ll put it in either over the weekend or Monday. That’s interesting about your belt. However, it is a good point about the stress, especially since I like seeing the 11psi of boost come up often... lol

Everyone is terrified of the dealer.
Just take it and get it fixed, f o r f r ee.
Do a walk around with the service writer, explain to them you are a nice guy, but will ruin his life if the car gets damaged. Take pictures, all four corners, both sides, front, back. Good pics in their lot.
Done.

So here’s the update.... changed out that upper idler pulley on the supercharger system and the ringing is still present, however it is not as loud. The idler pulley did have some slight play and was rusty on the back side. So I think it helped to put a fresh pulley in there but I’m thinking it’s the water pump/pulley. There is an ever so slight play on that water pump pulley when I push on the lip of it. Not sure if it’s normal or not, but at this point due to being under warranty I’ll have to go to the dealer. If anyone else has suggestions keep em comin and thanks for everyone that’s chimed in.

My experience with other cars is any play at the water pump pulley is a sign the water pump is bad. Yeah, I know the car has just around 8K miles but a water pump can go bad at any time. That's why there is a new car warranty on the car.

(Not a water pump but on a pretty low miles car -- less than 30K miles -- had what proved to be an idler roller bearing of the car's serpentine belt drive system develop a "dry bearing" sound. This was replaced under warranty and I paid to have the others replaced along with the tensioner. Never had an idler roller bearing fail before and I didn't trust any of the idler roller bearings or tensioner bearings on the car as it came from the factory. Some reasonable number of miles and years pass. Was hearing a faint chirp from the engine while running. Turned out to be a bad idler roller bearing again. Again had all replaced along with the tensioner this time all out of warranty. Drove car a good number of miles more and the idler roller bearings and tensioner were fine.)

My advice is avoid running the engine any and get the car in to have this water pump confirmed and replaced.

Another update.... It is confirmed to be the water pump. Absolutely shocking for less than 9k miles 🤦🏼‍♂️ I guess now if anyone experiences a similar noise we can help by pointing them in the right direction... Parts will be ordered tonight and a final update will be provided once it is repaired in 2 weeks. Probably going to switch to the green supercharger belt while I’m at it and put in a new thermostat.

👍 That is odd for it to go bad so soon
You sure wouldn’t have thought it

Last update: New water pump is in and the noise is gone. Bearings were starting to go in the original pump....after 8k miles...... unreal.
Put in a new thermostat and replaced the supercharger belt with an aftermarket Gates K100579RPM and changed out the serpentine belt while I was at it. JLT catch can also joined along.
Anyway, hope this will help anyone else who hears similar noises!
