Hello everyone,
I'm a long-time reader and first time poster on this forum.
I'll get straight to the point:
I have a 2019 Scat Pack Challenger. I won't get into the details but my engine block has a crack in it. I am considering the best option to fix it (& potentially improve it). My car is for the most part stock (no NOS, Boost, etc).
Option 1) Get a replacement short block.
This seems to be the most logical answer, however, I can't really find just a short block engine (they're either forged or long blocks). My cylinder heads are reusable. The forged 392 engines I was able to find were about $5,000 (+/- $1,000). The labor for cylinder heads & install (plus gaskets, etc) I estimate would be $1,500- $2,500.
This way I wouldn't need to get it tuned or anything. Quick turn around. Total cost: $7,500.
Option 2) Get an improved short block
I am considering getting a 426 or 448 short block since it's only marginally more expensive ($6,000) & I'd be able to use my cylinder heads for it too, same math as in option 1, except I'd need to get it tuned ($1,000 or so). This would take longer I'm assuming. Total cost; $9,000
Option 3) Get a replacement long block
This would save me on labor and servicing the cylinder heads (& save on the parts such as gaskets, etc.) but the downside is that it's more expensive: $9,000. Total cost: $10,000.
My question is this:
If my goal is to get my car up and running as soon as possible, what would you guys recommend.
If you were in this position what would you do? I am not opposed to adding a 426 forged short block now with the potential to add forced induction later (either a Whipple Supercharger or a Hellion Twin Turbo Sleeper Kit, obviously with new fuel pump, injectors, etc.)
Would you take advantage of my engine being pulled out to do any other modifications?
Thank you in advance for your insights!
