This is me too, 16 M6 and been wanting to do this for years. Still chicken lol
i had a 2020 before I got my 2016 and it had the newer stereo. I swear that is literally the only difference between the cars was the older UConnect. Maybe it’s time to do this but first I want to get a set of drag tires and clutch lol

Its funny i was just thinking about this a few months ago. Thank you for sharing, I may see If i can get this done too. I am not too mechanically included so well see.
Everything is plug and play. All the connectors only go in one way so its literally impossible to plug a connector in wrong. Besides the plastic trim tools and maybe a small flathead pocket screwdriver, the only other tool you will need is a Phillips screwdriver.

I've been thinking about this as well. Great to hear it's PNP on a 2016 A8. Gonna look in to this since it's literally the only difference between mine and the new model.

Isn't there a simpler way to do this with a module from a 3rd party like this?
That will not do anything or even work on the older Uconnect. That box will only work on the newer Uconnect radios that already have Android Auto/Apple Carplay. That being said, I do have a similar box and they are cool as you can do things such as watch Netflix, YouTube, etc., among several other things on the Uconnect screen. It is plug and play and works by using the mobile hotspot on your phone. I had it in my 2017 Charger Daytona 392 and it worked great. I sold the car and kept the box and just haven't used it yet in the Hellcat but I'm sure it will work fine.

I definitely would. 100% plug and play. I am very happy I did the upgrade. And for those saying the upgrade isn't cheap and I agree, remember if your old 8.4 radio is in good shape you can always sell it for probably $400-$700 and make some money back.

Is there a way to make sure I don't buy one that'll have this screen delamination issue I'm hearing about?

The one I purchased was brand new. I believe as long as it's new you should be fine. I recall reading somewhere that they produce/stock the new radios as the demand increases so it's doubtful if you buy a brand new one that you will have the issue the older radios/screens had.

From my research, the screen needs to be the SL03 version. However, I do not know if all new head units come with this version of the screen.

I’m on the fence, since I can either buy a new screen from a reputable seller for about $700 after taxes and shipping or a whole new unit (2019 or newer for the revised look) for $1,400.

Here is my delaminated screen.

After doing the upgrade I would definitely not spend $700 on a new screen to put on an old unit. I would do the upgrade and buy a brand new unit and put your old unit on eBay for any few hundred bucks.

I took a look at 2022 models and the prices are cheaper. Not sure which radio is the one though?
