anyone here using a yellow top optima battery??

I switched to a yellow top in June/July..August/September the car threw a random batter light.. voltage reading is all over.. sometimes 14.1 other times 12.5.

I don’t daily the car so I keep it on a trickle charger. The batter being fully charged doesn’t change the voltage reading.

I’ve had the battery and alternator tested multiple times they both tested good. But I went ahead and replaced the alternator… no change.

I’ve had all the grounds checked..draw tests done.. all good to go.

I’m down to two possibilities:
1. Voltage regulator, car is tuned so replacing the PCM will be a headache and ex
2. For whatever reason it’s the yellow top, does the pcm need to be programmed for a new type of battery?! Or is this car just that finicky that I need to buy a new OEM battery.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ouch on replacing the alternator... I hate throwing parts at a problem and you just proved it. :(

These cars are programmed/profiled for both the H7 & H8 Batteries and their CCA Ratings. I went with the H8 below and it was plug and play. Is the Optima like a H7 or H8? Personally, suggest getting the Optima battery out and go with the one in this post.

Fingers crossed the tune has not trashed the PCM Battery Profile Data. If you change batteries, make sure you cycle the F35 Fuse in rear Fuse Box after the change.

Best!

I usually would never just throw parts at car to fix an issue but I felt like the issues I was seeing were alternator related… clearly I was incorrect.

The optima is a H7… I’m going to check that F35 fuse when I get home. I had no clue any fuses needed to be checked or cycled after a battery change.

There are other threads here on how to do a dynamic alternator test for output. Might do a Search for future reference.

Based on your comments, I would not trust your current battery.

Fluctuations in voltage when the car is running are normal, but shouldn't ever be below 12v. Modern cars use computer controlled voltage regulators to extend battery life.

Did you check the code when it threw a light or is it still on? If still on, then yea would try a standard AGM battery.

Did you make sure the small wire is plugged into the battery voltage sensor?

It’s still a lead acid battery just some fiberglass in the mix. I think a trickle charger (less than a amp) slowly dries them out but that takes a while. He had problems from the gate. Doubt the charger has anything to do w it. Optima ain’t what they used to be - haven’t been for a long time. Good luck
