So I'm in the market for a radar detector... not quite sure what to get... I'm interested to hear what brand you guys like and how good they are.
Any must have features?
Do you regret not spending the extra cash and getting the....

I have the Uniden DFR7, have had it for about a year. Good filtering, long range, no surprises.

My only regret is I paid $250 for it and now its basically half off.

Try the waze app at least once before you spend 500 bucks on a good one i used the waze app for the first time on a trip from sw florida to philly and received an alert for every police car seen on the road i dont think it missed any. and you can use the app in states where radar is illegal.
So..... this weekend I took ur advice... I downloaded Waze and used it on about a 3 hour drive....
I must say it has really advanced since the last time I used it (about 3 years ago for my gsx-r 1000)
My Impression : It was very cool but i was definitely still nervous... I cruised at about 90 mph
What I was thinking.... The police have to know about Waze so how do they beat the app??? I would suggest that they probably do a better job of hiding to avoid app users from seeing them.... so I was still scared... conclusion: I'm gonna have to spend the money I think..... For a peace mind.. spend da cash
And save my a$$ (I just thought of that)
The police have to know about Waze so how do they beat the app???
Around here, the police is probably also busy keeping an eye on, and staying on the road, just like anybody else.
There's really no time to look at screens and such unless doing under 35 mph. And even the tourists don't drive that slowly.

Escort 360 and Waze
MAX 360 does NOT justify its 600$ price.
Uniden R3 (349$ only!!!) or Uniden R7 (599$) are much better and more reliable detectors, longer range and absolute beasts on sensitivity.
Here are latest testing results.
MAX 360 again, lags behind leaders.

I just ordered 2 of these @ $130/ea - what a steal they are now that the DFR9's are out and the 7's are being closed out.
I've been without a detector for a long time since moving here as there was little enforcement & the Sherrif's were pretty cool unless you were being a real a-hole.
But, the new sheriff is trying to make a name for himself & is catering to the retired crowd here that thinks EVERYONE should go 30 mph tops and there should be NO PASSING allowed ever !

Tried Waze, but there is just no participation locally, so it's useless. Lucked out on the timing of the blowout sales on the DFR7 - can't wait to get them !

That's interesting. That test must not have been conducted on basic roads.
At least my Valentine Ones pick up signals from miles away here in the open.

You never test detectors on an open road because in easy conditions even a sub 200$ detector can give you a save just like 800$ one or custom installed one.
Once you introduce curves, trees, crests you can see separation between low tier, mid tier and high tier detectors.
Also your low tier detector will not give you adequate warning if the cop is behind the hill or behind the curve doing instant on radaring. It just does not have enough juice (sensitivity in its antenna and HW) to detect short and weak signal coming from behind the curve/hill. High tier detector will probably pick it up if you are not the only one on the road.

Valetine V1 is not the champ anymore due to old style antennas however paired with JBV1 and latest FW and customized settings it can still provide you with adequate warning. Of course if you are going into hills and mountains like Calgary to Vancouver highway, you definitely want something with more range like Uniden R series.

I personally run V1 and will not switch it to anything else because of this ability to customize settings, dual arrows and still extreme sensitivity to weak signals.
When going into mountains I ll pair it with Escort Redline or Uniden R3 both on opposite side of windshield to reduce the chance for interference between two of them.

Here s Ariel's video from this testing graph I posted.

cheers.

Well, here in my corner of the Rockies there is nothing but curves, trees, and crests. And mountains, of course.
Maybe I've been lucky, but so far the Valentine One has helped me avoid getting caught.

Dont get me wrong, V1 is an awesome detector when paired with an app.
I would NOT trust it in A, L or small L mode just because these are all stock settings with 50% reduction in range (because Ka-guard is enabled by default) and at least 50% reduction in sensitivity (due to entire Super Ka band scan range).

When you disable Ka guard you get double the range and when you enable custom sweeps you increase your sensitivity by a huge margin due to narrowing sweep search.
I have 4 sweeps only:
1. 34.550 - 34.850 (wide 34.7)
2. 34.630 - 34.770 (narrow 34.7)
3. 35.370 - 35.630 (wide 35.5)
4. 35.430 - 35.570 (narrow 35.5)
33.8 is automatically scanned in custom mode.

Still, if I am going to have fun and have my mind at peace focusing only on driving and not if I am going to get pulled over and get my vehicle impounded, I always pair it with stronger detector on Ka frequency which is Redline or Uniden R3.
Found this funny.
Now this is what happens when you dont run laser countermeasures on your vehicle.
Poor dude didnt know what just happened until he saw a cop in the middle of the road 136mph in 50 zone ( fast forward to 3:00min just before same overpass I got hit with 2 most deadliest lidars in the world, Stalker XLR and Dragoneye).
Delta Police Officers pull over motorcyclist travelling 213 km/hr

Luckily for me, my AL Priority alerted me as soon as lidar beam hit my hood, jammed it so I was able to slow down, kill my sensors in like 3 seconds and allow the officer to get my 'under the speed limit' speed. 70 in 50 zone.
You cant do this with radar detector if hit with laser.
Watch the blue external LED flickering as I get hit and receive lidar pulses.
When you hear INTERFERENCE DETECTION ONLY it means I killed my system and its now in RECEIVE ONLY mode at which point an officer acquired my speed.
No seconds looks from officers what just happened. Just like my other hundreds and hundreds of encounters.

This is awesome... thanks for this...

I have to do some research... I'm not sure if the police/ state police in Pittsburgh pa use laser... or just radar...

Have used V1 for years. I did try an Escort for a while when I bought a new car. Really missed the arrows. Back to V1 for good.

Only PSP can run radar, other detachments can only use ENRADD, VASCAR and AIRCRAFT. However PSP started using LASER not long ago.
Radar setting:
X band off.
K band on (low powered K band is present like Raptor RP-1)
Ka band on (33.8, 34.7, 35.5)
Laser on.
Preferred to have "parking sensors". Autokill 4 seconds.

What about learning where the false signals are? I've only used Escort, so curious.
Thanks for the chart!

Usually anything higher than 24.180 is a BSM false from other vehicles.
Anything bellow 24.050 is usually also a false.
You need to get familiar with K band 24.XXX falses from other vehicles. If I am on a highway and get a blimpse of K band alert around 24.200 I am looking for a newer model car and if I find one I know its a false for sure. Mazdas are horrible and they run on 24.130ish.
If I get a K band alert 24.130ish like one bar I am getting cautious because there could be a cop running Instant On few miles down the road.
Ka band : I usually dont neglect it and I am extremely cautions when I get 33.8 +-100Mhz, 34.7 +-100Mhz and 35.5 +-100Mhz.
In Western Canada there are only 2-3 small town detachments that still use 33.8 so I usually disregard 33.8 because its the same frequency some cheap radar detectors leak its own signal like Cobras, Whistlers or any other.

K band alert within +-50Mhz of 24.125Ghz could be a police officer running K band radar unit.
9500ix is over a decade old detector with very slow processor, poor off axis M4 Escort antenna detection and mediocre range. It lacks

iX is a pure scam from Escort. It lacks digital update able IVT filter (has analog) and Escort stated a year ago it can not be updated even though in its marketing Escort stated iX will have updateable IVT filtering. Its a repackaged 9500ix haha

I personally drive with :
1. Valentine V1 3.8952 latest firmware paired with JBV1, custom sweeps 34.7 & 35.5, laser off, TMF2 on, Ka-guard off, mounted bellow rearview mirror.
2. Escort Redline International, Seg. Band 5,6,8, K off, laser off, RDR off, MRCD on, mounted up high passenger side.
3. Antilaser Priority, 3 front + 3 rear sensors, latest firmware 5.5.6, Hi-Fi module.
4. Uniden Scanner
5. Waze App for speed trap alerts.
6. JBV1 app for speed patroled by aircraft alerts.

If set up properly via app, V1 is a monster and would not switch it for anything.
Usually cruising 35mph over the limit, successfully evaded hundreds and hundreds of traps.
Hey night rider! Guess what... I Just picked up the uniden sds 100 it should be here Saturday... :D
