Gf & I have never been, but planning to go in June. Emerald Bay State Park looks awesome. Other than that, what are the must do things or places to go while there?

What are the best places to stay that don't cost a fortune?

Finally, looks like flying into the Reno airport & driving 45 minutes or so to Lake Tahoe is the most cost effective way to go, correct?

ski resort @ Lake Tahoe is great. Several mile + long runs. Anything snow related is great there during winter. Summer months, anything on the lake.... boating, fishing, wakeboarding, sea doo.... Thats what I've done in the past.

We have either driven to Lake Tahoe or flown into reno and bussed it on over.

We always stay @ Harrahs...

Since you're going in June, the ski resorts are closed, except for maybe a Gondola at Heavenly Valley that will take you to the top and back down just for the view. I'd fly into Reno and rent a car. The drive is pretty quick and you'll want the car to do some exploring. Truckee is a cool town with lots of pubs and restaurants.

Yeah, that's why I said what I said. A couple of the other respondents failed to notice your June date.

Lots of good hiking places (rubicon trail is good) , Lake Tahoe Boat Cruise, Tallac Historic Site, Sugar Pine Point State Park. Emerald Bay is really nice like you said. We found this cool little kind of secret lake off the beaten path called Cody Lake that is a good hike.

We're not skiing anyway
Want to go to Tahoe but don't gamble don't ski.

Why go at all? Stay home. Save some money.

Seriously, while I have been to that area several times it was just passing through. My general experience albeit years out of date is the casinos generally offered good room rates the idea was they make the money on the casino floor. I never gambled so I felt like I was getting a deal.

But price compare/shop hotel rates. You can probably get a lower room rate but off the main drag.

As for what to do the hotel probably has a brochure on things to see/do there or in the area. Boat ride, hiking trails, horse ride trails, maybe as someone suggested a ride up and down a mountain in a gondola for the view. Museums. Art galleries. Notable buildings. Maybe a tour of a mine over in Carson City or Gold Hill.

I once drove to Las Vegas -- this from northern CA -- about 500 miles -- to catch a Weird Al Yankovic show. Got the ticket comp'd when I asked at the desk, after checking in, about buying a ticket for the show. Pretty good show. My co-worker saw the same show when Al brought his show to a place in Berkeley CA a few weeks later. Took BART to/from the show.

In a strange town/city, I just sort of like driving around and doing some exploring -- of the mild sort -- on my own.

We actually decided to find another destination. For $2k more more just for lodging, it's not worth it IMO.

Maybe a Pacific Coast Highway drive & stop at some awesome places or somewhere else...
