Hey guys,

Food for thought for anyone with a moderately fully tinted windshield and a question on windshield tint and the laws in most states. For most, if not all states, I'm sure it is deemed illegal to fully tint your windshield, but why is that? It isn't illegal to wear sunglasses in any state that I am aware of, while driving day or night.

I'm curious if someone did have their windshield tinted moderately and ended up getting a ticket, if it would end up being thrown out with an argument that sunglasses are not illegal, so why would windshield tint be?

Anyone have any insight to this or know of any circumstances where the ticket was thrown out due to the sunglasses argument.

The reason I bring this up is because I have had my windshield on all of my cars tinted to 35% for years. I was pulled over for it a few years back and when the officer tried to explain to me why it was dangerous and illegal to have the windshield tinted, I respectfully argued back to him the sunglasses argument and he just gave me my license back and said, have a nice day. Haven't had an issue since.

I just thought this could be a good discussion for anyone contemplating getting their windshield fully and moderately tinted.

Let me know your thoughts.

It is illegal in many states because they want to be able to see into the vehicle to assess threat. I got popped a lot out in sunny Ca. I gave up running tint.

They will often let you keep it so they have valid excuse to pull you over. This allows them to pull you over after say you left a bar, even though your driving fine.

Just a way for the state to make money lol… Good argument though never thought about it that way, I run 50% on my windshield so far so good. Just waiting for my turn though
No doubt there.... Any law they can come up with to pull in revenue, they will.

Now you have a way to argue it like I did, if ever needed. ;)

"Maybe" in Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, or New York, but in my neck of the woods no way. So, you wear sunglasses at night huh????????? Get in an accident and you'll probably get a ticket for obstructed vision; or similar.

That's not apples to apples. They need to see inside and see the driver, not if your comfort level is good for you. Glasses have nothing to do with window tint except for the driver. They don't care if your wearing sunglasses lol.

It's also safer for other motorists to be able to see you so they can get an idea if you see them or not. I hate having a car sitting at intersection with black windows and you're approaching them having no idea if they see you or not and might pull out in front of you at the last moment. So I don't have a problem with no or limited tint laws. You can get tint that protects you against UV rays without being dark. This limo tint because it looks good is nonsense and creates hazards for cops and other drivers alike.

Legal or not it seems kind of ridiculous to me. Sacrificing a percentage of night vision to look cool. Pass.

Every state is different. I use Florida a lot because I worked in law enforcement admin here for a number of years... and FL has an odd approach to what laws they enforce and how. We're a famously lax state when it comes to emissions regulations and noise ordinances. So long as the car is pre '74, you can run uncapped headers in this state during normal hours (something like 7am - 11pm, but neighborhood zoning and city codes may amend this). We have similar laws on tint. We allow fairly dark tint on all windows (28% front, 15% rear), but we do not allow windshield tint below the "strip" marker on the windshield. For window tint violations, they just hand over a non-moving violation ticket... If they ever care to pull you over for it in the first place. However, windshield tint is something they enforce around here with Gestapo-like fury. Around here, if you get caught with windshield tint, they will either tow the car or force you to park it and have it towed yourself as they deem it to be an unsafe vehicle to drive. Florida's position is that windshield tint reduces driver visibility, especially at night, and that reduction in visibility puts other motorists at risk. Thus, you get a ticket for limo tint, but even a small amount of windshield tint is a towable offense. However, everything is up to the officer's discretion. At a minimum, you'll get a ticket for windshield tint, but they can tow the vehicle and give you court order to have the tint removed.

I sincerely hope that this is tongue-in-cheek. God help us if not.

I did the mistake of letting a shop tint the front side windows on a car. Not dark at all, but even in daylight
the tint made it hard to tell if a car in the distance was a cop or not.

Use the inside mirror? Nope, as dark as it can be on the rear and rear side windows, and I never use the inside mirror anyway.

At the speeds I like to drive on the open roads, not being able to tell can be detrimental to my driving record.

Just to clarify, I mentioned moderately tinted windshields, which would be 35% or higher, not the stupid dark windshields that are clearly not a good idea. You can see in from the outside just fine with 35% and above, so stating it's for law enforcement to be able to see you is a mute point. You can barely even tell the windshield is tinted when done moderately, but it makes a huge difference with glaring car lights at night and with the sun during the day.

Wonder why the officer told me to have a nice day a few years back when I made a case with sunglasses at night?
