4.5L whipple Build

Hello!

I’m still relatively new to owning my 2019 Charger Hellcat, only had it maybe a month or so, thing is a blast to drive. I’ve always had the goal of pushing 1000 hp with one of these cars but been torn on how to do it. I know guys have great success with pulley swaps, e85, typical supporting mods, and a tune to make those numbers, but I had a different idea in mind I don’t see many guys going with.

I stumbled recently on a 4.5L whipple that apparently bolts right up to our motors and is a plug and play replacement for the stock 2.4L. I’ve seen some videos of it and people put down some pretty impressive times at the track and they make anywhere from 900-1000 hp. With this supercharger, would there be anything else I need to do besides injectors, fuel pumps, tune, and an upgraded interchiller? I would ideally like to make the 1000hp on pump gas if that’s feasible but if needed I can do a flex fuel setup. Also I’ve heard you can’t really go over 22 psi of boost without the crank giving out or the heads blowing, is that true or is there some wiggle room in there for a head stud kit and just send it? I’m used to the diesel world, not really sure when studs are needed for gas/alcohol cars.

Thanks!

I have stock redeye/SS bottom end, 2.7 IHI, pulleys, tune, 23lbs boost, 1077HP put a rod right out my block after less than 1000 miles. Results may vary but that was my experience.

Yeah that’s the biggest thing I heard people talk about with it was the heat. Flows a lot and is super efficient but without a chiller people were running 140-160 IAT’s just while cruising at 1700rpm on the highway which is a huge no for me, the chiller would definitely be an upgrade I’d do

So I looked at the differences between the hellcat and demon 170 motors, and from what I can tell the only difference is the rod bearings and the main caps. Potentially might be a stupid question, but would someone be able to just replace the main caps and call it a day? Or at that point would I be looking at a new motor build essentially?

Tearing that far into your engine you might as well just replace the internals with billet/forged components that can take the HP you want in the end. Stronger pistons, rods and crank. Parts aren't your driving cost factor, labor is. Unless you have a shop/lift and the tools/knowledge to do it your self.

Sounds like an install issue or something is bent. This is a new one for me. The good thing about the 4.5 compared to the newer 3.0 is you can rpm the 4.5 where the 3.0 is not holding up when spun fast. Not sure why so many use a 4.5 and only have 6500 rpm redline. Rev on to 6800+ and start making more power. And no these engines aren't rpm limited unless using a pulley upgraded factory blower. Physics do not bend because of a make or brand. It's a push rod motor with great cylinder heads. Rev it to 7k and make some power. Check out Steve Morris with his 392 build if you have any questions. I got a great deal on a 4.5 and am not jealous of any of the new blowers. I'll add a little meth injection and cool the charge. No worries. I don't race anyways just like to rip around every once and awhile.

Built block that would handle 1k+HP $7500-$10k, roughly. So for a shortblock beefed up for 1k HP plus R&R you would be in the $12k to $15k range? My current longblock build rated to 1500HP is in the end going to run me $20-$25k.

I got 4-5 quotes from shops allover the east to midwest and they were all in a similar ballpark.

Damn, sounds like I gotta put my corvette plans on hold then if I wanna achieve this goal 🤣 could I buy the 4.5 and get everything else but just run it conservatively at 900 in the meantime to save up for a built block?
