So, my Redeye doesn't have an oil cooler...

This is what the foreman at the Dodge dealership told me today.

Backlog for folks who don't know me around here... but I'm a disabled vet. I could probably do my own oil change... but getting on the floor and getting up again are definite challenges. So, when I bought this Redeye, I got the 10-year free oil change package. I had it out with my local dealership, and this time, I took it 40 minutes north to GEORGIA from Tallahassee to get the oil changed.

As they were changing the oil, I did that whole spy on the tech thing by pretending to be talking on my phone. He never even moved to where the oil cooler is. I then watched him take a giant funnel and put 7 quarts of oil down the thing and that was that. Now, prior to handing them the keys, I told the advisor don't over-fill the oil or we'll be doing this oil change again.

They drive the car around, I check the oil, sure enough it's a good half to 3/4 quart over full. The advisor says the tech noticed there was no oil cooler equipped on the car. My response was, "Well, this is a bone stock car and every Hellcat, Redeye, Demon, and Super Stock made since 2015 has one in the same place. Mine's got one too." Usually, most people would say something like, "Huh, well let me go check with the tech." No, this guy says, "Sir, there is no oil cooler on this vehicle."

I said great, put it on the lift and get your foreman, the guy who worked on it and his boss out here and I'll show you guys where it is, what tools you need to drain it, and while you're doing that, I'll even pull up the Mopar service procedure that tells you how to do it. He says, "Sir, I can't make this more clear... your car does not have an oil cooler."

I just waved him off and when they got it in the air again, I pulled back the bottom cover a little and said, "Kindly tell me what that is?" The foreman's response was, "That's a cooler for the A/C refrigerant." No, I told him... that is over... here in the middle in front of the radiator. And showed him. I then followed the line coming out of the cooler and it goes... "So, there's refrigerant in my engine then? Or, is this probably an oil cooler?"

"It's not an oil cooler."

So, I said, "Look, you don't know me... but I know a little thing or two about this car." I pulled out 3 $20 bills and a mess of $1s and $5s. "This is all the cash I have on me... but I'll bet you, that if you undo that fitting there, oil is going to come out of it and not refrigerant." He then goes, "Well, I'll take your money then bill you to refill the refrigerant." I agreed and, sure enough, oil comes out of the thing. :)

I then said, "Look, I don't want your money. This is a teachable moment. I'm not trying to bean A-hole, but I would like for you to learn from this because if you've quote, "Done lots of oil changes on Hellcats," then you've done them all wrong. Every single one of them. I told him that I could honestly care less if the cooler was drained or not. I'd prefer if it was, but if you don't know how fragile this thing can be, I'd rather you didn't mess with it and instead of filling to the 7qt spec, put in 6 and feather in the last quart until it reads full.

But, sadly, he didn't take kindly to my alpha man splaining. "Sir, I know how to do my job." To which I replied, "Well, so long as your job is behind a desk, I won't argue, but if you're going to tell me that you do Hellcat oil changes for a living, then you not knowing where the vital components of the oil system are located on your brand's halo cars is kind of telling me otherwise."

The thing that pisses me off the most is that I can't just do this myself and avoid all the hassle to begin with. I can't put a lift in this garage (has a floating floor). So, I'm going to have to find another location to change my oil because... honestly, someone who's worked there for quote, "7 years" and has never been trained how to do an oil change on a Hellcat at a Dodge dealership... well, they're not for me.

Damn X … your rant made me shake my head and ask, how in the Fuk do dealerships get by doing this BS?!

Hope my tech stays where he is at OR i will do the oil changes myself (not knocking your situation X)
I have a local CDJR dealership 5-7 minutes from my home … NOPE (never again).
I drive 45 minutes one way for my current and after that is 1.4hrs one way

I can understand an oil change tech not knowing. They were probably a fry cook last year. If they knew even a little bit about how to work on a car, they'd be a service tech. But, these guys are the bottom tier right there next to the dudes who get paid to smoke cigarettes (aka lot detailers). What gets me is that this "foreman" is supposedly a trained technician that they send from the service dept. to the "Express Lane" and he manages all the techs there. This is the guy who swore to me that there's no oil cooler on a Redeye and that mine is different than every other Hellcat in that it's modified or some such.

Nope. Aside from the pretty glow-up bits and the JLT intake I have under the hood, my car is as mechanically bone stock as you can get. Trust me, the oil cooler is there heh. I don't know how that guy got promoted. I get the fact that a Hellcat, more less a Redeye, is a rare thing to see around here. There's only a handful of them on the roads, and I'm probably only 1 of 1 or 2 people who daily the damn things. So I get that they're odd... but I don't give a dealership a pass on that. They sold it. It didn't manifest itself. They either know how to work on the stuff they sell, or they don't. This dealership clearly doesn't. If you do some sleuthing on your own, you can figure out which one I went to, but I'm not going to publicly run their name through the mud. They might be a good service location, but my first impression is a bit less than favorable.

I got it for free, but normally it's like $800 or so. That package also includes free tire rotation. I got that and the Mopar extended warranty (10 years backed by this dealership group) as a concession for the sh*t show that was this car's ordering problem. Long story short, the previous owner of the dealership and his management sold me an allocation for a 2022 JB that didn't exist, took my money and after I told them I had a buyer for my current 2020 HC, they produced a fake POC to show my car was in D1 status. I sold it, and the 2022 JB was never made. I canceled that order 4 months later and bought a C8. That dealership didn't actually cancel my order properly, and later in Dec of 2022, Dodge built the car I ordered and it arrived 15 months later. The new ownership knew all about the problem and honored the 2021 dated POC's pricing and tossed in the oil change and extended warranty. I did have to pay for a portion of the extended warranty as they offered a 3y gratis, but I wanted to upgrade it to 10 (I paid around $1,200 for the Mopar 10y extended warranty... still a great deal). I still don't know how this car was ever built. All I have is that the production code was changed by someone in management (@Brampton) with a special authorization code listed on the build sheet. That gave it priority to be built and it started down the factory floor on the first day of 2023 Redeye production. I got a phone call about 2 weeks before it showed up at the dealership still with my name on the window sticker.

That is also why I'm anal retentive over this car.

This is why I say “f@ck dealerships for service” or really anything else as well.

I went and found a local mechanics shop near me, that I researched about their quality of work and talked to them about doing service like , oil changes and differential fluid changes.
They have been great and always treat my Redeye and myself as a valued customer.

I bring them my oil and filter (I use Amsoil) and they charge $35 to do it.

If I need bigger things done I take it to the Speed Shop I use. They have been great as well.

Sorry you are unable to do your own work but this is a perfect example of why when I buy a car with a warranty, it’s meaningless to me unless it’s a total engine or transmission replacement. I will buy my own parts and install them myself. I’ll buy whatever tools I need and do the maintenance myself. All to avoid the monkeys at most dealerships from touching my vehicle. I say most because it’s not fair to say every tech is incompetent or won’t take special care of your care, but they are definitely an exception.

Damn! Xy, too bad you're not up here in Jersey, I'd be happy to change the oil for you. I actually enjoy relaxing under the car on my creeper, watching the oil drip out of that cooler for an hour. I get a great nap and the wife knows where I am and not getting into trouble out in the real world! I have a side gig for my friends teaching them how to change their oil and avoid getting scammed by local one hour shops. No $ involved but I usually trade the oil changes for meals out with my friends.

The dealerships that even know about changing the oil cooler will more than bend your cooler lines getting the bolt on/off becuase they won’t care. Lose-lose proposition.

It's like I told them before I handed them the keys, "I don't care if you drain the oil cooler or not. DO NOT OVERFILL MY OIL. If you don't drain the oil cooler, don't blindly dump 7 qts into it because it'll overfill the engine." And dude did exactly the opposite. Declared the car had no oil cooler and dumped 7 qts in the engine :)

I know what they are. It’s a 21 year old college intern that doesn’t even know what a hellcat is. They just take your information, say we will handle it, then tell you to go to your local dealer.
No.

Dodge Cares is a bunch of entry-level grownups that relay information back and forth between you and the dealer, usually at slight to moderate delay. In other words, you can call your dealer and ask about the status of your repair or parts availability or whatever and they will look up the status and tell you. Or, you can call Dodge Cares and ask about the status of your repair or parts availability or whatever and Dodge Cares will call your dealer, who will look up the status and tell Dodge Cares and Dodge Cares will then tell you.

Dodge Cares has no authority to resolve problems, authorize repairs, authorize anything not spelled out in your warranty, expedite parts or force dealers with parts in stock to sell to your dealer. Based on the number of people that post that Dodge Cares should intervene in a problem it seems not many people understand this. Maybe it should be a sticky.

I've told the story several times about my experience when the engine in my Ram was replaced under warranty. The approval process was dragging on and on (it ended up being like 3½ months from dropoff to pickup) so I opened a case with Ram Cares which, for all I know, is the same people. I would call the dealer for status and a day or two later Ram Cares would call me and tell me the same thing I had heard a day or two earlier. The dealer finally called me one day around 5:00 PM to tell me the truck was ready to be picked up. I told them I couldn't get it until the next day. Left the dealership at 4:00 PM the next day. An hour later I'm literally pulling into my driveway when Ram Cares calls me with the good news that my truck was done and ready to be picked up.

TBH, Dodge dealerships are independently owned. Whining to a corporate customer service rep about a franchise location usually won't affect anything. This issue is a grassroots breakdown in common service operation at the local level. I'll probably reach out to the service manager and at least tell them what went on. Honestly, if their senior tech doesn't know where the oil cooler is on a Hellcat and he, "changes oil on Hellcats all the time," then that's a real problem and needs to be corrected.

This unfortunately is the dealership of today. I’m currently trying to figure out how to get my wheels fixed by my local dodge dealer. I took it to them to get “fixed”. I was told the first day the repair guy ran out of time so the car stayed the night against my will. Day 2 happens and I was told yup it was fixed so I was like ok cool I’ll come get it because I didn’t want it there another day. I get to the car and nothing was done. Now I’m trying to figure out how to get my wheels to my dealer to get fixed because I don’t want to leave the car there again. #dodgesucks

And here I thought I was the only one that had a dealer that struggled to change the oil. Mine is a slightly different story, but along the same lines. Relayed my experience to DodgeCares and I got a link to other dealers in my area. I for 100% sure will NOT be returning to my local dealer. I ONLY took it to them to get documentation of the oil change in their system for warranty purposes. I have a hoist and everything necessary to change the oil without a doubt. My 2 will NOT be going back.

My Redeye doesn't have an SRT light on steering wheel, I was told by my dealer. After I convinced the technician, he said he couldn't find the way to check it.
I told him, it HAD a light, it quit, so its broken. Please order me one & I'll bring the car back when it comes in so you can replace it, its the whole steering wheel airbag assembly. He said, "OK", & that was it. A week later I took it back after the part came in & it took him a whole 5 min. to replace it.
Thats the only time its ever been to the dealer. I don't (cant) trust them to do anything.

2018 Demons have the lighted airbag cover.

Dealerships....
I do my own oil changes on my Demon. But for my Grand Cherokee, I'll have the dealership perform them.

After years of having my wheels gouged by impact wrenches on previous vehicles, I will no longer allow techs to rotate my tires with the Grand Cherokee oil change. The service write up guy always looks at me weird when I tell him "Don't rotate the tires." He then asks why. I tell him nicely that I do that myself to avoid chips and scratches on the wheels. He says, "Well, I can't avoid accidents that happen." I replied, Precisely why I do it myself - carefully.

It's a shame today that service is all about wham bam thank you ma'am, get it in, get it done, get it out! Most of these places are understaffed for cost reasons, and don't pay people enough to take their time and give a darn about what they do. It's a shame some dealers aren't focusing on the SRT customers as special clientele. They should. Some do, like my local dealer, and I'll go to them. Others not - so I avoid those places.

I don't even want to get started on why nobody uses a fender cover anymore to prevent chips and scratches.
