If you have a 2015-2016 Challenger/Charger that has the older RA3/4 Harman Uconnect radio and want the newer 17+ Panasonic 8.4 Uconnect 4c radio that is much more responsive, has better graphics, and has full Android auto/Apple Carplay support this will help you out. I want to give credit to a post created from Tyla who made a post on the topic and I got some information from:

Uconnect Conversion Guide (15-16 Harman to 17+ Panasonic)

For the record I performed this conversion in a 2016 Challenger Hellcat with and automatic transmission. I had spent hours researching information and posts on various sites about the possibility of doing this conversion and read various topics where some people said or could be done and others said some options would be lost, etc. so I was hesitant at spending the money. I was originally looking at going the INFOTAINMENT route as they seem to have the process down and claimed their radios are pre-programmed to work with our vehicles. The issue for me was an upgraded radio (8.4 with NAV) from them is basically $2400 and the reality is the radio is not brand new but a used unit which is "reconditioned" by them. I also doubt they actually do any real programming of the radio.

I then thought about taking a chance and buying a used unit on ebay or out of a wrecked vehicle and take a chance but used units are going for between $1100 - $1400 and I would be taking a chance on the condition of the unit and the screen (de-lamination issues). So I ended up coming across Tyla's post and after taking some information from the post and doing some further research on my own here is what I decided to do and what my experience was. The end result is everything works.

Using the part numbers from the post I referenced, I purchased a brand new Panasonic 8.4 Uconnect radio with NAV (part# 68322340AM) online. This part number through Mopar shows the unit being for a 2019 Chrysler 300, 2019 Challenger, and 2019 Charger. I checked a few online Mopar Parts websites and the unit was listed between $1300-$1650 depending on the site. I ended purchasing mine at moparautopartsdirect.com as they had the cheapest price I could find. They were $200+ dollars cheaper then some other sites.

I then purchased the newer USB hub (part#68294075AA). This is the USB hub which is in the center console. This part is required if you want to use Android Auto/Apple Car play. I ended up purchasing a brand new one off ebay because the price was cheaper than the dealer / mopar parts websites.

Both parts arrived within a few days. The install is pretty straight forward and I had everything installed within 30 minutes. You just need to remove the dash/instrument cluster trim. I used a plastic trim tool and took my time and the dash/instrument cluster trim simply pops out of the clips holding it in. Once removed there are 4 screws which hold the radio in place. Remove the 4 screws and you can then pull the radio unit out of the dash so you can get to the back of it to remove the cables/connectors. On the new radio the placement of some of the cables were in a different place on the back but the connectors are color coded and also keyed so they can only go in one way so you can't mess it up. The new radio had some extra connections on the back of it most likely for different vehicles/options. Don't worry about these just match up the connectors from your vehicle. I then replaced the USB hub in the center console. The repair manual/dealership will tell you the center console has to be removed in order to replace the hub. This is not true and will save you a bunch of time if you do what I did. I simply used a very thin plastic trim tool along with a small flathead screwdriver to push in the clips on the old unit and pulled it out. You can see how the hub is held in by looking at the new one. The console compartment has enough flex in it to allow you to pull out the old hub. Sorry I don't have pictures or videos to share on the process, but you can find how-to videos in the post I referenced or on youtube.

I did not disconnect my battery before replacing the radio and hub. Once they were installed, I started the car. The Uconnect came up with a blue background. Some apps took a minute to appear on the screen. I waited a few minutes for things to sync before testing anything. After a few minutes a scrolled through the Uconnect screen. I had read on other posts where people who replaced the radio had some of their options such as heated seats, climate control, etc. grayed out as if they were not being recognized. All my options such as heated/vented seats, steering wheel, and climate control appeared as they should and worked along with the radio and siriusxm. One thing I noted was I did not see an SRT app/icon or anything for performance pages. I scrolled through the settings looking for something regarding SRT or performance pages and there was nothing. I also tried my SRT button on my center console and that was not working. Something else I noticed in the Uconnect was when I went into the display settings and selected "theme" it only showed options for Chrysler. The radio seemed to appear as if it was in a Chrysler product. I was slightly concerned not having performance pages, drive modes, etc. but I also remember all the stories of people disconnecting their battery and losing performance pages and it taking a while for them to come back. I also took note the center stack on the dash was working normal, the car recognized the red key, etc., I just could not change drive modes. One thing I noticed was when I turned off the car, the SRT splash screen came up on the Uconnect so I figured things were slowly coming around. I then decided to try disconnecting the battery. I let it sit for about 15 minutes and then reconnected it and tried everything again. Everything was still the same as before, no SRT button, no performance pages, etc.

I had read where Uconnect had reportedly told people to cycle the ignition to "ON" 3 times, without starting the car and on the 3rd time start the car and go for a short drive and that supposedly helps restore things. I tried that to no avail but one thing I noticed was I checked the display "theme" options again and this time it showed Dodge as the options so I knew things were slowly coming back. Some people have said it took a day for their performance pages to come back after losing them from a battery disconnect, etc. I don't know why it would take that long as it has nothing to do with the radio having to download anything OTA as all the software/programming is already on the unit but I decided to let the car sit overnight anyway. Fast forward to the next morning. I started the car and when the Uconnect screen turned on, I noticed the drive modes button was now present. Once the Uconnect loaded it still had the Chrysler "font". I went into the display theme and all the Dodge, 1,2,3,4,5,6 theme options were present. I selected one of the Dodge themes and then the font changed and everything appeared as it should. Also, the SRT app/icon along with performance pages was now available. The SRT button on the center console also worked as it should. I checked SRT mode, performance pages and everything is present and worked as it should. The newer performance pages options such as the DYNO graph option was also present and worked. Needless to say, everything works as it should - all apps, SRT modes, performance pages, satellite radio, Android Auto, etc., everything works as it should and you would never know the radio unit was swapped out unless someone told you or you knew the car was a 2016 model year.

I am very pleased with the upgrade. The newer Uconnect graphics are high def and much clearer and the system is much faster and smoother operating then the old unit. For example, when I select performance pages they load within 2 or 3 seconds instead of the15 to 20 seconds it would take for them to load on the old radio. I know some people have stated you need to have the BCM flashed if you switch out radios. I don't think that is the case for at least the 2016's. I have read in a few places that a 2015 model year does require a BCM flash and sometimes has issues with heated seats not working. I can't speak on that as my car is a 2016. At least for anyone with a 2016 model year who wants to do the upgrade I say do it. I would suggest not going to INFOTAINMENT and pay $2400 for a used unit that has been "freshened" up. The way I did the upgrade was super easy and the parts were brand new. My advice to anyone that does the upgrade is not to panic if things don't work right away such as no SRT mode, etc. Just be patient. For whatever reason it takes a while, and in my case overnight, for all the modules in the car to "talk" to each other and get synced up.

**One thing to note, if you had an active Uconnect subscription before doing the swap, I do not know if that will be affected by replacing the radio as that is the only thing I did not test as I do not have a need for the Uconnect subscription. My siruisxm works fine, and the radio displays the 4g signal so you may not have any issue but I wanted to make sure I mentioned it.

Nice job!

So what was the bottom line price?
I paid $1378 for the new Uconnect radio + $125.00 for shipping. I paid 123.50 for the USB hub including shipping so all in the entire project cost $1626.50. Since making the post some have said they will do it while others have said it was too expensive or I should have just went with an aftermarket. setup that had Android Auto. YMMV but my thing was I wanted everything to look factory and I also did not want to lose any factory options such as steering wheel controls and heated/ventilated seats and steering wheel, SRT mode and drive modes etc. I know there are some aftermarket radios where you can get aftermarket harnesses, etc. to make some things work, but I did not want to have to coble things together and there is no aftermarket setup I am aware of that will allow you to keep drive modes etc. I wanted a factory setup and a true plug and play option and the route I took was exactly that.

This is great news. I also want to upgrade my 2016 for CarPlay and the Dyno graph. Does you ventilated seats work? Does all the heat seat and steering wheel come on fine? I’m nervous spending 1500 and then losing all the features I love so dearly.
Everything works as it should to include steering wheel controls, heated/ventilated seats etc. As I mentioned, if someone had my car they would never know I upgraded the Uconnect radio unless I told them or they new 2016 model years are supposed to have the older Uconnect radios.

Somebody asked if I had any pictures so I snapped a couple when I got done running errands today to show everything working.

Interesting that the Horsepower field just says "Red" now instead of 707.
That's just a hard coded number and not a big deal though.
Funny. I didn't even take note of that. All the horsepower readings in performance pages, dyno graph, widgets, etc. work fine and display the horsepower numbers.

Its funny i was just thinking about this a few months ago. Thank you for sharing, I may see If i can get this done too. I am not too mechanically included so well see.
Everything is plug and play. All the connectors only go in one way so its literally impossible to plug a connector in wrong. Besides the plastic trim tools and maybe a small flathead pocket screwdriver, the only other tool you will need is a Phillips screwdriver.

Isn't there a simpler way to do this with a module from a 3rd party like this?
That will not do anything or even work on the older Uconnect. That box will only work on the newer Uconnect radios that already have Android Auto/Apple Carplay. That being said, I do have a similar box and they are cool as you can do things such as watch Netflix, YouTube, etc., among several other things on the Uconnect screen. It is plug and play and works by using the mobile hotspot on your phone. I had it in my 2017 Charger Daytona 392 and it worked great. I sold the car and kept the box and just haven't used it yet in the Hellcat but I'm sure it will work fine.

I've been thinking about this as well. Great to hear it's PNP on a 2016 A8. Gonna look in to this since it's literally the only difference between mine and the new model.
I definitely would. 100% plug and play. I am very happy I did the upgrade. And for those saying the upgrade isn't cheap and I agree, remember if your old 8.4 radio is in good shape you can always sell it for probably $400-$700 and make some money back.

Is there a way to make sure I don't buy one that'll have this screen delamination issue I'm hearing about?
The one I purchased was brand new. I believe as long as it's new you should be fine. I recall reading somewhere that they produce/stock the new radios as the demand increases so it's doubtful if you buy a brand new one that you will have the issue the older radios/screens had.

From my research, the screen needs to be the SL03 version. However, I do not know if all new head units come with this version of the screen.

I’m on the fence, since I can either buy a new screen from a reputable seller for about $700 after taxes and shipping or a whole new unit (2019 or newer for the revised look) for $1,400.

Here is my delaminated screen.

After doing the upgrade I would definitely not spend $700 on a new screen to put on an old unit. I would do the upgrade and buy a brand new unit and put your old unit on eBay for any few hundred bucks.

I took a look at 2022 models and the prices are cheaper. Not sure which radio is the one though?

View attachment 600759
I strongly suggest using the part number I provided. I remember looking up a 2022 radio using a 2019 vin and it said it was not compatible. I can't say for sure and I don't think there really was any difference between the 2018-2022 uconnects but I'm not positive. The part number I provided I know several people now who have ordered it for the upgrade and it works without issue.

Still kind of curious about this. Alfa says 2015-2016 bcm, so how are they different? Also, my car was made in may 2015
Regarding Alpha. Look at post#45 in this link. He has a 2015 and did the upgrade

I've got a 2016 Challenger Hellcat and am using the 4G adapter. I'm not very happy with it as it does not support Send N Go & other features which functioned with the stock 3G unit. Also, I no longer appear to be receiving traffic updates.

Does anyone know if the upgrade in this thread would bring the aforementioned features back to life? Also, I'd like to know if my current 4G subscription would work with an upgrade.

Thanks in advance

Alex Craig
The 4G is built into the radio so it should work. The 4G shows on mine when I did the upgrade. I don't pay for the Uconnect subscription so I can't comment on Send and Go but since the 4G works you should be fine in theory.

Me, 2016 M6, Thought about doing this upgrade since I had the car in 2017. Has anyone done this on an M6 car yet? Curious how the Dyno features would work because the car has no idea what gear it’s in?
Christmas is around the corner and it would be a great Christmas present for myself lol
The original post I linked where I got some of the information was done in 2015 M6.

Thanks Ccso77.

Is the Send and Go listed in your Apps on your Panasonic upgrade?

Also, I don't suppose you get NAV traffic updates without the Uconnect subscription?

Lastly, I'm guessing the current map data does not come with the upgrade and that I would need to get a VIN # for a 2017 Hellcat to be able to purchase the correct map data. Can anyone verify that supposition?

Thanks in advance.

Alex Craig
Send and go is listed in my apps and nav works as it should. I would have to check if it's the lasted map update but I know it shows some newer roads in my area which the old Uconnect did not.

Hey Ccso77,

One, hopefully, last clarifying question please.

I did some additional research & discovered that Android Auto is a much bigger deal than I initially surmised.

Somehow I thought it was simply an app that would afford media streaming to the vehicle. Apparently, it allows you to mirror your cell phone (in my case an android Galaxy S8+) to the Nav console and pretty much allows one to use voice commands thru the NAV to launch/mirror any app on the phone to the NAV screen. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I presume that Android Auto would be launched by a new app icon that appears on the NAV screen after startup? Of course, after you load the Android Auto app on your cell phone which I gather is automatically installed in the Uconnect system the 1st time you connect the phone to the system via the USB interface.

Assuming that is the case, my concerns about voice replies to text messages are built into the app & one has the ability to use any navigation app (e.g. Google Maps, Mapquest, etc.) which would include traffic updates & would automatically display current map data as they are automatically downloaded/installed by my cell.

If the above is true, the upgrade is definitely well worth the expenditure of $, time & effort as I'll have voice control over practically all the apps on my cell phone. That would immediately preclude spending $125 for a Uconnect map update & the time/effort to install it, just to mention one benefit. Pretty slick.

Please confirm my expectations in this regard. Thanks in advance!

Alex Craig
Android Auto works great. You download the app in your phone and then once you plug your phone into the USB hub you will then do everything on the Uconnect. You can use Google maps, Waze, etc. Voice commands work great. You can use the "Ok Google" phrase to do things just like if you did it on the phone. And if you want wireless Android Auto where you dont have to plug into your phone I highly recommend the Motorola MA1 adapter for about $90. You can plug it into the USB hub in the console and you then will have wireless Android Auto. When I get in my car and have the adapter plugged in it takes about 20 seconds for my phone to wirelessly connect and Android Auto comes up on the Uconnect and everything works exactly as if the phone was plugged into the USB hub

Well I took the plunge and did this mod. I have a 2016 with the A8. Install was straight forward. As mentioned many functions were not available at first. Next day most returned with the exception of heated/cooled seats. Mild concern at this point. Waited another day. No change. Thought I might have to get the BCM reflashed. Decided to try disconnect the battery for awhile. Reconnected. Started up. Heated/cooled seats returned! All in all, a great update to the vehicle with the updated graphics and increased speed.
Yep I recommend anyone doing the upgrade do a battery disconnect like I described and quille did. I think it's needed to get all the systems to play nice. To me the upgrade breathes new life into the interior of the car in the sense the old system seems so dated (graphics, speed, options, etc.) once you do the upgrade.
