Whining sound coming from rear end on highway

May have to turn the sounds up a bit to hear.

I have a whining type sound coming from what sounds like the rear end of the car. I can only hear it at freeway speeds and it’s louder in 8th than 7th.

2016 Hellcat Charger 21k miles. Only mod is a Dynomax muffler.

Anyone have any experience with this sound? Thanks in advance.

You can try a diff oil change but that almost never cures the whine, the oil change with additive will usually cure the groan in turns but the whine if bad enough, usually means a new rear diff.

My 2021 has had a diff whine since the day I drove it home 550 miles ago, between 40 and 50 mph , if you have a quiet rear end the 75w85 diff oil factory fill my be fine, it just means ring and pinion are set to the correct depth and ring and pinion have the proper profile on the teeth and surface finish is good and a few other things, I am going to change mine to a higher viscosity oil maybe the old viper 75w140 , the goal is to keep the ring and pinion gear teeth from touching each other a few microns will do it. I doubt you will be able to measure the mileage loss with the thicker oil, also these thin walled aluminum casting allow more noise to escape, the old iron rear end housings really made a noisy rear end sound better as they held in more noise . I listened to you sound clip it is louder than mine, if I were you I would put the higher viscosity diff oil it and see what happens, the longer you drive it with a whine the less chance to help the whine as over time the gear teeth will create a bad gear profile.

My 2015 Hellcat whined for over 100K miles. I only heard 50K of it when I got my hearing aids 😁 . There are TSBs about it and several discussions on this forum as well. You might just want to get used to it.
I don’t want to say it’s impossible to get rid of it though. I got a 2022 Redeye with no whine, even with my hearing aids 😉
