Smoked Clutch and Bad Boyz Twin Disc

Hey all,

I'm sure this has been beaten to death on here by now but I have a few questions beyond getting a new clutch. Last weekend I smoked my clutch at the drag strip. After second gear my cat did not want to shift and I coasted to the 1/8th turn-off. On my way back I was able to shift and drive it back to the parking lot but the shifts were a nightmare. Upon leaving the track shifting into first was a matter of forcing the shifter into gear and as I pulled away first just felt nasty and had a bit of hop. Driving home all other gears felt like there was an obstacle or block to get it into gear but not as bad as first. When trying reverse it is the hardest of all. I literally have to force it into gear.

Here comes my question. The car obviously wreaked of burnt clutch. Do you guys think this is just a clutch issue or do you think something else may be damaged as well? I'm on the enlisted end of the low pay scale in the military lol. With that being said I need to choose my next steps carefully.

I have since read about how crappy the stock clutches are. I would definitely not meet the one-time factory replacement criteria. I am considering a Bad Boyzz twin disc clutch but depending on your guy's recommendations I may need to re-evaluate if I may some other issues going on based on the symptoms. In past manual vehicles, I have never had a hard time getting the trans to go in gear even if the clutch was toast.

Until I get this figured out the cat will just sit in the garage. If a Bad Boyz twin disc setup sounds like a fix and someone has a list of all of the special tools I would need to procure I would greatly appreciate it. I'd rather buy the tools than pay someone else to do it. If anyone has advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Cheers,
Hud

I'm in the process of installing mine. I bought a MaxJax lift because Id rather pay for the tools than someone else. I went with McLeod RXT clutch and modified HRB.
The BadBoyz is probably the best clutch. Just make sure to get the hydraulic release bearing. I suspect your hrb failed after the fluid got nice and hot. Solution for that is Wilwood high temp dot 3/4. I'm trying to figure out how to get the old fluid out of the clutch line.

If you can bring the car to a stop by pushing in the clutch, and if it will pull without slipping. I think you may have a trans problem with the shifting issue. If the clutch will not disengage fully it can cause shifting issues as well. I know this is not much help, but maybe give you something to consider.

I'll 2nd the McLeod 1200 RXT. I have one, should have it installed by the end of the month (So unfortunately no personal review of it yet). Nothing wrong with the BBG one, but it's about 2x the cost of the McLeod. When I had a clutch go out on me in another car, when you accelerate the car feels like its on ice and goes nowhere (slips). Not sure if you have a warranty still, but the trans will need to be pulled and inspected to see what broke. You may have damaged a couple things. Good luck!

On a side note once I get my OEM clutch out, I'll be selling it cheap (1k miles on it no burnouts, or races) if you are looking at just getting your car driveable asap.

Thank you all for the input.
I'm trying to compare and contrast-
-Bad Boyzz Twin Disc
-McLeod 1200 RXT
-Mantic Street Twin

and figure out if there is more damage. After reading some of these replies I'm a bit concerned there may be more trouble here than just the clutch but I suppose I will not know until I get everything apart. When I get home this afternoon I will try running through the gears without the engine running and see if everything is still tight like it is while its running and update what I find out. I've been searching and searching but haven't found anything that sounds like a dead ringer for what I am experiencing.

BBG triple, surprisingly streetable and I haven't seen a failure with 100 hard 1/4 passes

BBG double here and no problems as of yet.. it is just a different animal than stock.. i would like to hear some feedback from anyone that has run multiple after-market systems.. i was speaking with a member last year at some point and we both agreed the BBG clutch is nice but no-where near as buttery smooth as stock, and takes a little getting used to.. but as far as i am concerned it is built like a tank so far..i would rather have longer lasting than smooth personally, but to all the members considering a change, be aware that it is different as far as pedal release and feel.. you can forget creeping around quietly in low rpms :D

You are correct. However, for those that have mentioned (1) free factory replacement when under 12k miles or 1 year of age... They are also correct. Mine was under 12k miles but I bought it new in 16 so no replacement for me. That's fine though. Not worried about a free replacement, especially after reading up and seeing that the stock clutches are garbage anyway. For now, I have a really expensive piece of garage art and am saving the penny's lol.

I did get a pretty badass private message about RAM Clutches. Am really examining this route.

i would like to know more about the RAM clutch as well..

I ran a Mantic triple disc clutch in my modified C7. About 20% more effort but the grip was phenomenal. My only issue was it was noisy as hell. I had a top tier shop install it so I wonder if that's just a downside to a heavy duty aftermarket clutch?

bump..

i realize this may be a touchy thread.. full disclosure: i have a BBG twin.. i have been happy with it. i think Toddy did a good job and worked hard to help me get it installed. after i had it for some weeks or months (no clue really) another member on this site put up some pics of what looked like a very similar clutch for a lot less money.

this member i am referencing has not been active on the site and may not even have a cat anymore. personally, i got a lot of great ideas from this member. not going to go into specifics but lets just say i was not the first on a lot of my mods at all.. not even close.. i copy great ideas like anyone else.
that is why this forum is so AMAZING. the people here all have so much knowledge and experience to contribute!

i am not trying to start a war here about clutches for the Hellcat. i know that i had the same questions regarding these clutches some of our other members have regarding similarity and pricing. does anyone have anything they would like to contribute on this matter? i would like our members to know that may not be as well versed in precision machining and precision measurements as others; this is a very custom modification and a difficult install.

my un-official un-professional advice is this: go with what you like. do your due diligence and track down all the threads that pertain to this issue. some threads and topic sections have been deleted since i was last active on the forums. it is a sad thing because i no longer have those threads to reference. i would also like members reading this to know that i am not pumping one companies product anymore than i will for other companies. i believe in being fair and putting all the information out there and letting our members decide for themselves. please do not make the mistake of just throwing different parts at your car because someone said you should. my clutch is sweet. seriously. it is built like a tank. its been done perfectly and that is because i have great friends who are AMAZING TECHS. i am a tech myself with credentials from a great school, but it is not what i do for a living.. adding a competition clutch to the Hellcat is not a decision that should be taken lightly, and can make or break your driving experience. and ask yourself what that experience is? are you at the track every week? or are you getting groceries and just enjoying daily driving or the occaional Sunday drive? all things i would personally weigh in your decision to go with an aftermarket clutch (or any part for that matter) i know for a fact some of our members need a triple disc.. they are hard core. that is an understatement actually :D
lol
myself, the twin disc was plenty and i can tell you honestly it is not as comfortable to drive as the stock clutch was. please keep that in mind when making your decision.. do you need a competition clutch? so i hope this helps m6 members that are looking at a potential purchase. not trying to start some he said she said war over clutch designs. i keep my PMs private. message me if you have questions and i will do my very best to help you make a decision based on what you may or may not like, by providing very honest feedback. i realize people are running businesses, but i pull no punches when it comes to reviewing a product. if there are cheaper alternatives of the very same product you can bet your bottom dollar i will go that route as i think most people would agree with that. but is it the exact same product? that is what i would like to get to the bottom of.. thanks for reading my book, and thanks in advance for any help, or feedback. i have been off the forums for a while, i am glad to see that companies are making more parts for our cars. i would like some help myself when making purchase desicions. is that not what this forum is all
about? we share the knowledge and groan and moan, or get all excited like little kids over our cars. that is the fun of it all..
hope this reply helps clarify some things.

i will be available for book signings in the future. :)

Bad Boyzz garage appears to have been in business online since 2008

the clutches look very similar to me.

what is the difference between the two?

are the pictures for Ram accurate?

I found Ram clutches on the Summit Racing site last night, and they do not look the same as those pictured in that link above, but I may have the wrong model selected?
